I wouldn’t; I would self study for something like psychology or biology and actually take the AP English Lang class. It’s one of the only tests that is entirely skills-based rather than a regurgitation of information learned throughout the year. The test expects a certain level of writing that is different than what is usually covered in underclassmen courses, at least in my school. This is definitely not the test to self-study for.

One more reason (for us, at least) is that 4 years of English is required to graduate at our school, so if we don’t take AP English Lang., then we would have to be in regular English. So even though realistically, I’m a decent enough writer that I could probably get a 4 or 5 on my own, I’m still taking the class because I might as well, considering regular English is my only alternative.

I wouldn’t self-study for AP Lang either. I had an amazing teacher, and I find it hard to believe one could get a 4 or 5 without the guidance of a teacher. Even though you may be a good writer, the graders on the AP Lang test look for skills that (mostly) can only be refined through NUMEROUS practice with a knowledgeable teacher to guide you.
