Hey guys I was wondering what your thoughts were on self studying ap lang or ap lit.
I'm not really a liberal arts kind of guy but I'm pretty good at writing essays under pressure. I'm in debate and extemp speaking if that helps...

So what are your recommendations for or against self studying either one of these exams?

I would say AP Lit is very possible self-study. Just read 4-5 of the suggested reading books and take some critical reading practice quizzes and you’re golden. If you handle the suggested reading and actually practice your “close-reading” skills, you should have no problem. I haven’t taken APlanguage so I can’t say anything about that.

I did both. Well actually, I wouldn’t call it self-study because I did no studying for it except take a practice quiz online the night before (that I found by googling… think it might have been the sparknotes one) of the MCs, and I briefly glanced at the old essay questions. Just to make sure I knew the general format of the test. Essentially I did 20 or 30 minutes of “studying” for each test.

My school has a pretty good English program though, so maybe that’s a factor. But idk, “self-study” it if you want I found it quite easy.

Probably Lit. Lang you need to know more specific terms, etc. Either would probably work though because they’re mostly based on writing/reading ability.

I took language with almost no preparation (just looked at the types of essays, didn’t take the class) and did fine. You need to know examples for lit, so that would require some studying

These aren’t tests to study for. They are basically what you know. That is why a class is VERY beneficial because you get to practice MC and essays and have a teacher there to tell you how to improve. So in other words, you can’t really self-study for these because you honestly can’t study for them period.

I’d go with English Language. In lit you need to have read certain books in order to answer one of the free response questions. With English Language all you need to do is buy 5 steps to a 5 or a similar prep book and familiarize yourself with the types of free response questions. It only took me a couple of days to self study for English Language
