AP Latin

I have a few things to ask.

1 - - For anybody else who took the AP Latin: Vergil exam this year: did you think we had waaay too much time? I think everyone that was at my testing location [which was like 20, lol], was done with MC pretty early, and the FRQs really reallly early. I had some trouble with MC, since I don't know grammar as well as I should, but aced the FRQ and wrote nice, descriptive essays - and still had like 45 minutes to spare, I think. Anybody else think so too? Or am I just weird... lol.

2 - - Who all is taking AP Latin Literature next year? What authors are you going to do? I think I'm doing Ovid and Catullus, 90% sure. Also, for people who've taken it in the past, what authors did you choose, and how did you fare on the exam?

3 - - Who else is really upset that they're cancelling Latin Lit after this coming year?!! I'm upset simply because BOTH Latin exams have had rapidly increasing numbers of test-takers, and now they go and drop one of them. However, it doesn't affect me, since I graduate next year, but still. What about schools who have to offer alternating years of the Latin exams because they don't have enough students to fill both classes? Ugggh. Anyway, just wondering if anybody else is bothered by this.

Thanks, all :]

Edit - and no, I don't know my Vergil score yet.. I'm one of the few still stubborning waiting for the mailman to come, who's not going to give up 8 bucks to a non-profit organization. :]

Didn't anybody take Latin?? :]

Think about this, not many people in their right mind would take AP Latin. I've finished Latin I and II, which was hell. I'm not touching another Latin translation again.

Because most people taking AP Latin actually somewhat like Latin, they would tend to do well on it. I know this one kid who took Latin 1-5 and both AP Latin classes. I'm surprised he's not going to be a classicist.

Lol, I must not be in my right mind - I took AP Latin for my second year of it!

But see, I thought Latin I was hell, which was why I tested out of II. It was just.. boring. It moved too slowly and I didn't like translating crap about Caecilius and Metella and all those other losers who didn't even matter.

When I heard that the III class was going to be AP level with Vergil, I was so excited! I mean, finally, I got to do what I wanted with Latin - translating stuff that people actually used to listen to in Latin, back in the BCE. How awesome is that!? Anyway, just my opinion, but AP Latin was 1000 times better than the lower level courses.

I took AP Latin (the class) this year, but figured any use of my money was better than wasting it on the AP test.
We did Latin Lit (Ovid and Catullus) this year and I think they're doing Vergil next year. I opted not to take AP latin my fourth year and just take latin 4, so I don't know anything about the Vergil class.
and Liist, I took five years of latin and I don't like latin. It looks good on a college application.
and yay for waiting. I was too cheap to pay the 8 bucks too, but I got mine today. You should be getting them soon.

daisym - do you know the range of scores that your classmates got on the Lit exam? those who took it, I mean.
And yeah, Latin does look good :] That's why I picked it [other than the fact that I didn't want to take Spanish, French, or German, lol], but after that I realized that it came easily to me, and I liked it.

Also, about saying "any use of my money was better than wasting it on the AP test," do you mean that you would have failed the exam? or that you wouldn't use the credit in college anyway? Just wondering :]

I took Vergil this year. The MC I can't remember that clearly, but I think I might have had a little time left over at the end of it. The essays I had absoutely no time at all. I was done with like three seconds to spare.

I'm taking Lit next year, and I think we're doing Ovid and Catullus too. At least, I know we focus on Catullus a lot--I'm not sure about Ovid.

I just got my scores today, I got a 5 on the exam, so I guess all my worrying over it was unfounded. I really thought I had failed the test.

Congrats on your 5!! :] Still haven't gotten my scores though :[

Lol, and YAY I've found another person "crazy" enough to take 2 AP Latins :D

I took AP Latin Vergil this year and yes I do think we had wayy too much time at the end. When I finished, I had like 20 minutes to spare.

Anyway I graduated this year so won't be taking latin lit next year nor will I be continuing it in college.

I took Latin Lit this year. We used the Ovid/Catullus syllabus. I think it helps to have a teacher who's dedicated to Latin, as mine is. I go to a public high school, but she keeps the AP classes small. She's a very good teacher. In fact, the Latin teacher at one of the city's fancy and expensive private schools visited our class to see how we do so well on the National Latin Exams and the AP's. For as long as my Latin teacher has taught Latin, for about 10 years, only one student has gotten below a 3. She says that the student's name is etched in her memory. I got a 5 :)

I took both, too, although I don't remember if I had any time left over. I did remember that both were much easier than expected. My Latin teacher was devastated (latin root! haha had to, had to) when she heard they were cancelling Latin Lit, especially after College Board made all the teachers write up extensive syllabi for their courses. She, too, was very dedicated, and I can say that for most of the Latin teachers I've met.

Latin should have two tests like Spanish and French, for sure.

I self-studied for Vergil and am frankly surprised I garnered a 3, LOL. (My teacher, who was going to teach AP Vergil, unexpectedly lost his job and I ended up getting really burned out on Latin midway through the semester due to serious frustration with our Latin program and senioritis. The net effect of that was that I'd done pretty much no translating since January when I took the test. I actually nearly didn't take the test at all.)

I'm annoyed that they're cutting Latin literature, but as I just graduated it really doesn't affect me anymore.

Is Latin and Community College any good/easy?

I already took Latin I and II and I would like to make up for those ****ty grades.

^I don't know myself, but I'd like to find out as well!!

For those wondering.. I got my scores today and got a 3 on Vergil! I'm so so disappointed and am very seriously considering getting it rescored. I feel that I could have gotten a 3 with my essays alone, and I'd at least like to see if the score changes with the MC handscored. Although I don't want to sound conceited, I still really really think I got at least a 4. And it's worth 25 bucks to me to find out. I was the top Latin student in the AP class, I got summa cum laude on the NLE or some other Latin exam lol, etc etc, I just really thought I did better than the score I got.

Latin is a hell of an AP test (probably the most difficult IMO). I took 3 years of Latin and decided not to take AP Latin because I absolutely suck at the subject (I did manage to get summa cum laude on the national test somehow...). I have quite a few friends who have gotten straight 5's on all other exams (one has 6 5's the other has 7) and neither got they both scored 4's on Latin. Getting a 5 on Latin is GODLY.

Even if not a 5, I swear I got better than a 3.

I took Horace and Catullus for Latin AP Lit. I got a 4 with a lot of BS on essays. The essays really do make it one hell of an exam, but if you actually TRANSLATE passages during the year (instead of studying translations...) you will do fine.

INVENIAMVIAM--I don't know what people go this year- but out of the 10ish of us in the class only 3 people took it.
Last year I think the top score was a 3 on Vergil (and the people who got threes were good at latin).
I didn't take the test because I had a bad teacher and didn't care enough to learn the latin. I would have been lucky to get a 2. I scored on the NLE every year but this year, I just don't know enough vocab to do anything.

I don't know... I did actually translate during the year, not studying other translations, and I think I know my vocab pretty well. And I totally aced the 3 FRQs, my translation was spot-on [I'm POSITIVE because we'd just reviewed that passage so it was really fresh in my mind how to translate each bit.. the only thing wrong was I put the cloud was like icy instead of golden or something lol oops. Anyway so I missed the point for that phrase, but that's it I think]. And I don't know.. I just thought I did extremely well. Other people there were complaining about not knowing any of the essays, not writing them at all, etc etc. I'm just upset right now.
