I don't think so, and I don't think 'Ender's Game' is a book that they'd qualify as having literary merit, either.

actually, i'm curious about this too. would a book that's pretty obscure, but old and by a reputable author be okay to write about?

Our teacher said that any book that has a cliff notes version of it that is longer than the actual book would be called literature.

^ Lol!

I'm pretty sure Ender's Game isn't of literary merit because, being sci-fi, it does not focus on universal themes as much as typical "classic" novels. This does not mean that sci-fi cannot be literary merit. Slaughterhouse-Five is sci-fi, but is generally considered to have literary merit because it takes the story of a war memoir, yet focuses on the theme of free will. Ender's game cannot be as deeply analyzed for aspects of literature because it's a relatively simple story. I know this might seem like vague reasoning, but its the biggest difference between non-literary, and literary novels that I have noticed. By the way, I'm currently reading Shadow of the Giant, by Orson Scott Card.

ha use your judgment. isnt too hard to figure out if a book has literary merit or not

I'm gonna use Harry Potter and Little Red Robin Hood because they have sexual undertones and phallus symbols !!!

What about a book that's a kid's book but it is of literary merit? Like "The Secret Garden" or something? and also, How does the scoring on this test work? If you skipped an essay entirely, could you still get, say, a 4?

Usually books that you can use for the test you read at school...you can look at some free-response Lit essay questions. They give you a list of books that you can use, although you're not limited to them. Some of them include Great Expectations, Things Fall Apart, Crime and Punishment, The Scarlet Letter...that good stuff.

do the bible, goosebumps #4, Beverly Cleary's "Romana the Pest", enders game, or any Beatles' album liner notes

good luck
