How loosely do you think they define "comparable literary merit" on the last essay of AP Lit? Obviously Harry Potter is out of the question, but what about, say, Kurt Vonnegut?

Additionally, do you think its a bad idea to pick a book that's not on the list to begin with?

You can pick any book of literary merit. My teacher gave us two short books that she said we can prep that will fit for any topic and told us to prep those. Most likely they won’t be on the list. If the reader gets an essay on a book they are not familiar with they find a reader that has read it.

I’m pretty sure you can use a Kurt Vonnegut book. He is a well known author.

Kurt Vonnegut should be fine. I don’t think it’s a bad idea to use a book not on the list; I think they just put those there to raise some red flags in our minds if we’re really at a total loss.

God, I wish Harry Potter was allowed.
