I am currently taking my school's econ class, but there's no AP option. I am hoping to buy a book and teach it to myself this semester. Does this seem like a reasonable goal? If so, what book would you recommend? I will also have a period every other day to work on this in addition to class time.

I’m doing the same thing, it’s definitely doable.

If you need a textbook, I would say Mankiw’s Principle of Economics, but I’m getting by just fine with the AP Economics review books (my personal favorite is 5 Steps to a 5, but Princeton Review is also good for this one), just finish early enough (by mid April?) and take practice tests.

I took AP Macroeconomics last year as a freshman, and I think the main reason I got a 5 on that (and AP Human Geography) was because I loved economics. I was completely fine with memorizing the graphs, a few equations, etc. because I WANTED to. Honestly, if you have interest in it, I think you can easily get a 5, but if you’re the type of person that gets bored, drifts off, and doesn’t have that much time, I’d think it through. I didn’t use a review book, so I can’t recommend any. I did use a textbook, though. I think it was Krugman’s AP Macroeconomics. Again, I’m the type of person that has a “passion for learning,” but honestly, AP Macroeconomics is one of those classes that changes your view of the world around you. Taking that class was the best decision in my life :P… Not trying to rub it in your face or anything…

ANYWAYS…
Main point: If you think you’ll like it, definitely do it.

Thank you! I got 5 Steps to a 5 today. It contains both Macro and Micro. In one semester, would it be reasonable to do both, or just one. I’ll be a business major next year, so I’m definitely interested!

Your ability to do both Micro and Macro in just one semester will depend on a few things. First, how much time do you have to commit to studying after your current homework and all other after school activities are complete? Second, how easily do you pick up on these types of topics? Third how are you able to retain the information learned? My son self studied Micro last year, received a 5, using 5 Steps To A 5 and OWC’s Micro course. He had to cram for two weeks before the test before he felt comfortable with the material.

I’ll be in a normal macro class every day, and I have an every other day period to study these topics. The load would be one chapter per week using 5 Steps.
