Anyone else other than me freaking out over AP Music Theory on Monday? I seem to have exhausted all of my available resources for the FRQ's (particularly melodic and harmonic dictation), but I still don't feel very confident. Does anyone have any old free response questions (such as 2002 and older) or know any website that offer them? Unfortunately, collegeboard doesn't seem to have the audio prompts for 2002 and older on their website any more. I would geniuinely appreciate it, thanks!

I’m a little worried about the FRQs except the melodic dictation and the sight singing. D:

MC is easy, in my opinion.

Melodic dictation I THINK I’m okay with… I have the potential to get a perfect score on that if I’m fully concentrated, I’m just afraid that my concentration will waver on the test… APMT is my very first AP, I’m quite nervous.

I always think MC is easy while I take the part but I always miss so many when I check my answers! I just took the 2003 Practice Exam and I got 52/74 on multiple choice. Is this a good sign, if I want to get a 5…? I just CAN’T identify meter and modulations. Does anyone have tips with that?

Honestly, most colleges don’t even take APMT, so I’m not worried about getting a good score to impress colleges… just to impress myself I guess. :P

I’m freaking out too! I’m taking the class in school, and it’s freakishly easy. But the test is REALLY hard. Harmonic diction and sight-singing are going to kill me. And those listening questions terrify me.

I did buy the new Barron’s book, and that seems to be helpful. If you want, I can send some of the material to you? According to the Barron’s calculations, everyone does horribly on the APMT exam, so the curve is pretty high… I got a 4 on a practice exam I thought I did badly on.

My voice is kind of monotone and I am terrible at singing. Will this screw me over for the AP Music Theory exam? However, I have perfect pitch.

Definitely not. If you “sing” the proper rhythms and don’t hesitate/stop while singing, you will get 10 out of the possible 18 points for sightsinging (5 for each one). Unless you do poorly on the rest of the exam (but if you have perfect pitch, I doubt the rest of it will be a problem) you can still get a 5. Sight singing isn’t actually weighted that much.

I’m sure the graders can distinguish the intervals that you sing, especially if you have perfect pitch. Also, as creative_copycat stated, rhythms will give you >50% of the points.

I am so nervous for this test… I absolutely cannot do dictations for my life.

How is the curve?

^This I want to know too. I’ve heard how “hard” it is, and I’ve been practicing, but I have no idea what kind of score is “good,” so I have no way to measure my confidence.

I think the curve is pretty decent. We all know they don’t determine AP grades by percent, but according to Barron’s, if they were to do it by percent, about 65% or higher accuracy on all parts of the exam is a 5.

(And creative copycat, I bought the Barron’s book too! It truly is helpful. I’ve devoured the entire thing, so I’m in search of more resources)

Okay, good. I was thinking the curve must be good since the test seems so ridiculously hard. I’ve been studying music theory for 2 years and the practice exam we did was awful. My friend in the class said the teacher historically has an 85% pass rate, and seeing we both think we’re really underprepared, hopefully that leads to a good curve haha.

I don’t know about you guys, but for me it’s time to cram! Since I probably won’t be coming back here again before I take the test, I just wanted to say… GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!!

I didn’t think the test was all that bad. I thought the music choices were strange, like the weird drums + plucked strings one a la Africa tribal dance one…

Melodic dictations were tricky I thought. I was hoping for a cut time major one, and a 6/8 or 9/8 minor one, since I would only bomb one, but oh well.

Harmonic dictations were easy. As were the sight singing. I’m feeling pretty good.

I loooooved that electronic tribal folk stuff. Soooo cool.
Anyway the melodic dictations I failed at…I swear I can hear, but only getting to hear the piece 3 times. Christ. The aural multiple choice was easier than I was expecting, and the non-aural was crazy easy, but you had to know the right stuff cuz it seemed like every question related to melodic transformation. Harmonic dictations were harder than I expected. For some reason the soprano lines were easy, chords were pretty easy, but I couldn’t hear the bass line like at all. ***? Also both sight singing ones I got them 5 points for perfect rhythm and fluency at least, but on the minor one Idk how good my pitch was…
Argh I wanna know what I got dammit!

It was hard! I loved that tribal song by the way. Anyone know what it is called or any lyrics? When can we start discussing the answers? I thought melodic dictation was pretty easy this time and same with the first sight singing.

lol im posting this just for the sake of finding out what that awesome song is. it sounded like an indian or middle eastern song with western elements (sry if i messed this up). loved the plucked string, the synthy drums, and vocals. it made the ap music theory test worth taking haha. if anyone knows what song that excerpt was from that would be awesome! thanks :D

That was an awsome multiple choice part. Tribal song was sweet, pretty sure I got the questions for that one too.

I’m so glad they didnt ask questions about the stuff I’m bad at. And I’m so happy they used english songs instead of ■■■■■■■■ german or italian ones.

Melodic dictation was meh, I hope I passed.

Harmonic dictation was absolutely ■■■■■■■■, no one could hear the ****ing bass part. I just made up random chords based on soprano so probably failed both. But thats okay, since if only worth like 9% of your overall grade.

I practiced so much for sight singing, but choked and screwed up pitch and rhythm at the end. Still passed though.

Non-aural composition was super easy, Non-aural multiple had a couple of tricky ones, but was still easy overall. Got a 4 at least, but hoping for a 5.

If anyone discovers where that very cool tribal song comes from on today’s test, please let me know. it made the test worth it

^^
yeah someone should ask collegeboard and pm me
