AP Music Theory

Is anyone else taking it? Has anyone taken it in the past? My AP Music Theory class was only one semester long, and it was last semester, so I feel very ill-prepared.

Any advice/comments would be greatly appreciated!

You’ve got to be kidding…I’m the only one!?! Man…this does not bode well… T_T

no, i’m with yoU!!! and my sister is taking it too…so that makes 2 more…
but i’m kinda nervous cuz i didn’t take an official course…i’m alright with the frq…but i actually had a question about them!!
whenever it is V does it mean it is a 7th chord?? and all the rest are triads??
i’m actually sorda nervous about the mc too…the only part i’m not is the sight-singing part cuz i hav perfect pitch and am pretty good at that so that will be a breeze…eveyrthing else…not so much…

and…if a chord just says 6 on it, is it talking about a seventh or not?

Yikes…I should know that, but I don’t. I have a lot of reviewing to do.

I’m so nervous about the sight-singing. I’m a horrible singer, and I can’t do dictation to save my life.

I’ll get back to you on those chord questions. I should look those up so I know it, too.

oh thanks…i tried figuring out by the answers…but got so confused that i gave up and went to chemistry instead…:)…
i have to cram-study all the specific terms tomorrow…:(

Same here…I need to review intervals, and also filling in harmonies based on a base line. Do we need to know history, too? (For example, the Baroque period, the Romantic period, etc?)

ehh…i don’t think so…but my review hasn’t been that extensive, so we might…but i’m like 90% sure not…
i have to review the different modes…and cadences…i suck at those…

Shoot…I don’t even know what modes or cadences are…I am in serious trouble.

Care to enlighten me? ;)

umm…i’ll give you my limited knowledge…:)…cuz this is before my review…lol
but modes are like phrygian, dorian (doing a scale from D), Aeloian (scale from A)…i can’t remember the other ones…crap…
and then cadences…it’s like deceptive, plagal…and the one that church songs end on…(that’s what my piano teacher says…)…
but that might help give you a general idea of what i’m talking about…
we should start a little 2 person review here…:)

Definitely! We should study separately, then set up a time to both be online and study together. Maybe sometime tomorrow, since I’m planning to do most of my cramming between tonight and tomorrow morning?

yes that would be great! just tell me when…i’ll probably be studying sometime sunday night/afternoon…and i’m studying now for it actually…

also…do you know any online resources…like practice tests or whatever?

hey, everyone, i took this test last year and received a 5 on both subsections. If anyone has any questions, feel free to PM me :)

noreallly, i have a question, on the frq section…when do you know to use seventh chords, and when do you use normal triads…i’m really confused on that…

i’m taking it.

i already sent in my grade cancellation for it though, i’m def gonna get a 1. i don’t have the ear for it, oh well! nyu doesn’t accept credit for it anyway.

I’m taking it! My free response isn’t too good (dictation is the bane of my existence…) but I’m okay on the theory part.

To answer previous questions –

no you do NOT have to know any history. The questions are only on theory - ie chords, cadences, phrases, counterpoint, intervals, etc.

Chord notation is in roman numerals, therefore a chord labeled “V” is built on the fifth degree of that scale.

And about the numbers notating inversions:
Triads are recognized by seeing either NO number (root), a “6” (1st inv), or a “6/4” (2nd inv)
Seventh chords are labeled in order counting down from 7 – “7” is root position, “6/5” is 1st inv, “4/3” is 2nd inv, and “2” or “4/2” is 3rd inv. (For visuals: [Seventh Chords and Roman Numerals](http://www.alcorn.edu/musictheory/Version2/theory1/seventhrom.htm))

A mnemonic I made up for the modes is “I Don’t Play Loudly, Muscles Are Locked” (I’m a pianist…) with the letters standing for Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, and Locrian (hence the "loc"ked part). This is the order of the pattern of steps for the modes.
Just remember the major scale pattern WWHWWWH (“We went home when we went home”) for Ionian and move the letter in the front to the back for every mode after Ionian in the order (Ionian = WWHWWWH, Dorian = WHWWWHW, Phrygian = HWWWHWW, etc.) Also remember Aeolian is minor scale.

Here’s a good page with music terms geared to AP studying: [AP Music Theory Study Guide dedicated to Maggie Piper](http://www.scribd.com/doc/3468010/AP-Music-Theory-Study-Guide)

Sigh. I will fail dictation though =( I’m hoping to do well enough on the theory portions to pull a 3, which is the score that UNC will accept. I’ve seen some discussion on how certain music schools don’t allow basic theory AP credit to transfer… but I’m not a music major so blah! =P

Sometime late this afternoon/early this evening would be good. Apparently, I have a LOT of studying to cram in, because my teacher never even mentioned modes or cadences, and I am supremely confused.

im kinda nervous just cuz i havent had any real practice…except for the frqs…

I’m taking Music Theory too. I’m nervous, but I think I’m well prepared for it, or at least, as prepared as I’ll ever be (except for sight singing).
