I'm a high school student, entering my sophmore year this coming September, but I already have a hard decision to make. I was planning on taking AP European History this year but decided that it would be too much work for me to do. So I decided to take honors global 2 instead. But turns out that all honors global 2 classes in my school are full for this year. So I'm forced into a situation that I don't like... AP or Regents?

But I know that regents would look horrible on my transcript since I'm an all-honors student who didn't have a too bad GPA last year. But I'm kinda afraid that this year if I take AP European History, then my GPA will dip even lower than last year's, and I will get only 80's and not 90's or 100's.

This is what my counselor told me. “Take the Advanced Placement class AND get an ‘A’.”

So, I did both. I know this advice doesn’t help much in the long run, but if you are taking classes solely for your transcript, then you are not being “educated,” you are being “schooled.” In any case, if you have time to pour into AP Euro (and trust me, you will be studying your butt off), then go for it. It’s a fascinating class.

First of all, it’s really NOT that hard of a class compared to some monster APs (e.g., Physics B if you’re aren’t a physics natural, English Language) you might face in the near future. Also, you’re only a SOPHOMORE. So you can devote plenty of time to AP Euro since most 10th graders aren’t going to be taking too many other APs. The curve on the AP is incredibly generous and for most kids, if study Euro properly, you should do very very well in the class. How do you know you’re not gonna get an A? Give it a shot!

While we should always be taking classes for the purpose of learning and fulfilling our passions, I have to note that APs do look good on transcripts for ivies. You want to challenge yourself.
