AP Physics 1 vs Physics

Course selection for next year (my senior year) is coming around and I am deciding between these two courses. Some background on me: I plan to be a bio major. I have taken AP bio (and loved it, I am very good at rote memorization). In the coming year, I plan to take AP lit, AP gov, AP calc ab, and physics (possibly AP) . Usually, I am always down for a bit of a challenge, however I do not like math at all and expect that I may suffer through AP physics. The only reason I feel an obligation to take physics is because I have never taken a physics course and I think it would be good to have background on the subject matter before entering a college-level physics class. Would colleges look down on me for taking physics instead of AP physics on top of a pretty rigorous schedule?

Also, is the content in AP physics 1 much more difficult than normal physics?

If you want to major in a science, it’d be better if you took AP Physics1. It’ll prepare you better for the rigors of college physics (a class which can be weedout depending on the college you attend).
Why major in biology? It can be a good choice but right now it’s the major with the lowest ROI due to an oversupply of bio majors.

Alright thank you, I had a feeling that would be the answer. If anyone else would like to add feel free

Look up what type of math is in AP Physics. Is it something you already know or is it something you would have to work on?

I do not know the formulas involved, however I am capable of the algebra involved in solving the problems.

AP Physics 1 usually contains nothing above the scope of Algebra 2 (arguably, even closer to Algebra 1 math), so you should be good. Also, if you are going into STEM, I strongly recommend AP.

At my kid’s school, many of the students in AP Physics 1 had a year of conceptual physics first, and it still has a grade distribution centered around a C. You might talk to the physics teacher / other kids and see what’s typical for your school.

Alright, I do not believe that is the case at my school, however I will verify this with the physics teacher. Thank you for bringing this to my awareness.

AP Physics 1 is essentially algebra and knowing a tiny bit of trig (special right triangles and trig functions like sin, cos, and tan). After basic chemistry you can choose AP physics 1 which is just faster pace and more in-depth or honors physics which is a joke class, all the formulas are given and it’s just a plug-and-chug.
