Course selections have rolled around again and I find myself at a loss as to which science class to take my senior year. I'm taking AP Chemistry now (without ever taking high school chem before) and I'm finding challenging (in a good but mostly stressful, sleep-depriving way. I have like a low 90/high 80s.) However, I am definitely not a math or science person. The only two options I have for science next year are Regents (regular) level Physics and AP Physics B. (This will be taken concurrently with pre-calculus.) I hear that the AP Physics teacher isn't very good and that the textbook is next to useless because it is calc based.

I don't WANT to take AP physics, but I feel like a non-honors course after AP Chem will be a joke. That said, I dislike math and I'm not really a science person. I plan to take as few math/science courses as possible when I go to college. Would I do horribly?

Mostly, I'm worried about how this will look to colleges. I go to a public high school and they only offer a few AP courses, and so far I've taken the only ones available to someone in my track, APUSH and AP Chemistry. I'll be taking AP English next year and the rest of my classes are all college-level/honors. Will it look bad to selective universities if I don't take this AP? I'm looking at schools such as Notre Dame, Bowdoin, Swarthmore, Boston College, Georgetown, American, Fordham.

I'm definitely in the top 10% of my class, I think (will know for sure Thursday) that my SAT scores are decent, and my extracurricular activities are respectable (debate captain, lots of volunteering with church, peer tutoring, Girl Scout, 1st clarinet in the honors band, Girls State, Tri-M, hopefully NHS next year, a couple of awards.)

Will one regular physics instead of AP make it more difficult for me to get accepted? (Would I fail if I did take it?)

Don’t think it’s a game-changer after everything, but 2 AP courses Soph and Junior year isn’t very much.

I am definitely not a math person, but i am a science person…ap physics is not a science course, its a math course. Its all word problems and complicated matter.

I was not supposed to be placed in AP Physics, my lovely counselors at my public hs did. I showed up the first day of school horrified. I tried to switch out of the class but my counselors placed me in that class for a reason, BUDGET CUTS! Basically because my schedule was course specific and because the other regular physic classes were filled they had no where else to place me.

I have a B- in the class right now and am anticipating a 1 on the AP exam. It is by far the hardest class I have taken and my teacher is horrible at explaining things( which he admits so he referred me to the MIT lectures they have online. They helped conceptually but not mathematically).

I think you know what you need to do: don’t take it. Im just reinforcing the idea you already have. You know that the class is going to be difficult for you. It is about 90% math and it doesnt sound like you are prepared for such a difficult class.

physics in general is all about LOGICAL problem solving and then some memorization which you should be fine with (especially cuz u took ap chem which has a lot of memorization involved)
physics is DEFFFFF not all math
its barely math
the only math u use (its physics b) is algebra and sin,cos bullcrap thts rly easy
physics is a subject of pure logic and rational thinking and i really do believe that those who are “better” at physics have higher IQs and are generally “smarter” only because physics is just problem solving n thts about it.
i got a 5 on physics b btw
BUTTTT once again if you are not a logical thinker and consider urself “not a math person” (which means ur calling urself dumb because math is all about problem solving and logic as well) then dont take physics b

I think that was extremely rude. You could have just left it as logical problem solving. Instead you attacked all non math students by calling them dumb, which in your part, was not dumb at all…

^completely agree
Salzhrah, you had me with the whole logical thinking part but then you started calling ppl who aren’t good at math stupid which is a dumb claim to make in my opinion…

Salzahrah, I completely disagree with you. I think there are many non-math people that are very smart. Math is not for everyone. Many of the greatest philosophical minds hated math and believe me, they were very smart thinkers.
