Im a junior in highschool at the moment and im looking at what science class i should take next year as a senior. This year, im in algebra 2, (wouldnt let me take it over the summer last year, and wont let me take pre-calc over this summer because the school stopped providing summer courses), and im getting A's across the board from midterm to marking periods. Im also in regular physics, and had a C+ last marking period, and a B this marking period, and a B for the midterm (midterms are half way-mark tests). Im not reallllly good at it, but im decent, should I take AP Physics B? Will it be hard considering im only in Algebra 2? Thank you.

I would not if I where you. Your grade in regular physics and current math level suggest that the class would be hard for you. Could you take a different AP science next year?

There’s AP bio, ap chem, ap environmental science, but none of those go well with my major (computer engineering). I heard ap physics b is more algebra based, which im really good at, but others say that its calc based too, which i did not even learn yet. I need to hand in my schedule tomorrow so im in full panic mode right now. I don’t want to to bad in it and lower my gpa, but I also neeeeed to do it. Any more ideas?

I personally am not in the class (I am currently in honors physics), but have a lot of friends who took/are currently taking AP Physics B. From my understanding even though it is algebra based it is extremely hard if the highest math you have completed in algebra 2. Though really the C in regular physics is what raises the red flag in my eyes (at my school you can’t take AP physics without getting a B in physics and it is strongly recommended that you don’t take the class without honors physics first). How did you do in bio and chem the first time you took them?

B+ in bio and B in chem. Also in my school, as long as you average out a “B” for the whole year, you can take AP bio, chem, physics, etc. The only reason I got a C+ first marking period was because I bombed the first test, but I recovered from that and I am now at a 85-ish range. I just don’t know if I could tackle a class so rigorous :/

First of all, AP Physics B is completely algebra and trigonometry based. There is no calculus - that’s for Physics C. It’s not that rigorous, it’s just that there are a lot of topics to cover. These topics aren’t covered in much depth.

You shouldn’t select classes based on your major - you want a broad education in high school. With that in mind, you should probably choose AP Biology or AP Chemistry, as they require less math.

But the thing is that say I do well in physics B, I can continue with physics in College as my major is engineering. I don’t see how biology and chemistry will help me in the future. I love math. It is easily my best subject. It’s just that I need to know if I will do good if I take it or do bad. Anyone currently in physics B or taken it before?

If you’re really good with math, I don’t see why physics would be a problem for you.

I’m in AP Physics B right now. It’s going fine for me. What exactly are you worried about? Any questions?

Hmm, I’m in AP Physics B right now and took precalculus last year. I haven’t really come across anything that a student who completed Algebra 2 would be unable to do, but then again I’m not done with electricty and all that yet.

Oh, electricity…shakes head Electricity is filled with tons of algebra.

Okay thanks everyone, I will probably take the class then.
