I'm an uprising senior this year, my school will start next week here in New York.
I'm planning on going to 2 years of New York State school (SUNY), then I want to transfer to Columbia University double majoring in economics and computer engineering.
I'm looking at both SUNY Binghamton and Columbia right now. It seems like they have different AP policies. Columbia has a stricter policy where they accept only 5's on some AP exams and sometimes they don't even accept any credit at all on some other AP exams. Right now, I have taken 6 AP exams so far and will have taken 10 more this years (a total of 16). I have an average of 3.83/5 on my 6 AP exams so far (2 3's, 3 4's, 1 5's). According to Columbia AP policy, I will rarely get any credit at all. However, according to SUNY Binghamton, I can almost skip a whole year or semester of freshman general ed classes. So, I'm curious to how the AP credits were being counted in SUNY Binghamton or any college in general.
For example, I got a 4 on my AP Stat exam, which can get me 4 credit hours in SUNY Binghamton. Also, on the college board website, it says that AP Stat (with a score of 3 or higher) is equivalent of MATH147 in their school. However, Columbia only get you credit hours if you score a 5 on AP Stat. In SUNY Binghamton, I can almost start my major core classes if I can get enough credits to skip the general ed classes in SUNY Binghamton. Since Columbia has a different AP policy, will those AP credits backfire against me? For example, when I transfer to Columbia (assume that I'll get in), do I have to take the general ed classes again over there? I'm sure those AP credits will somehow show on my Binghamton transcript, but how the school is going do it becomes a problem. Will most schools just say AP Stat (with 3 credit hours) or MATH147 (or anything equivalent depending on the school)? If AP Stat shows up on the transcript, it will be a big problem because Columbia or any school that I'm transferring to will immediately knows that I get the credit hours from the AP exams and they will make me follow their AP policies. If MATH147 shows up on there, will Columbia know that I got the credits from AP exams? Will they assume that I actually took an intro statistics class in Binghamton and give me the credit hours for it? I'm really frustrated now because my AP scores is conflicting with the Columbia AP policy. For example, I scored a 5 on the AP Physics B exam, but they accept 4 or 5 on the exam. While I got a 4 on AP Stat and AP U.S, but they only accept 5. Besides that, if I start taking my major core classes in Binghamton, will Columbia even accept it? Since they're major-related classes (unlike general ed), will Columbia prefer to have you take it in their school?
I'll really appreciate it if anyone can leave a commend!
