I have to pay for AP tests at my school pretty soon. I could take both English Literature and Biology, but I don't know if I should. Would I even have to take a Literature class as part of my degree plan? (I'm going to major in bioengineering and/or biochemistry). Also, considering that both of my potential majors involve biology, it doesn't seem like it would be a good idea to pass out of that biology class...or would it?

If u have to choose between the two I would say that Biology would be most beneficial

You can’t receive distribution credit for English Lit but you can for Bio. Bio will also be a part of your degree plan so u can use that credit to get more room in your schedule. The only reason why I wouldn’t pass out of Bio is if you think you didn’t receive a competent level of education of the material or if you are pre-med. Medical schools, I have heard, like it more when you take Intro Bio at the college you attend.

I didn’t mean that I have to choose between the two, just that those are the two that I’m considering taking.
What do you mean by “distribution credit”?

^^ I think this link may help:

[AP Credit | Office of the Registrar | Rice University](http://www.registrar.rice.edu/students/ap_credit/#4_or_5)

@ bird rock I actually read that first, but neither that page nor anyone’s posts so far have told me whether I will need the credit from AP English Literature for the degree(s) I mentioned.

You need 4 classes in English/Humanities/Foreign Language to fulfill the distribution credit. If you don’t pass the writing exam in the summer, you will have to take the freshman writing class (COMM 103), which can then be used as one of your distribution credits in english/languages. You don’t have to take an english literature course per say, but you will have to take some english/humanities related course at Rice to meet distribution. Here are some of the classes that fulfill D1 requirements:

[Course Offerings - Fall 10](Course Schedule - Fall Semester 2010)

By the way, I strongly recommend you take the AP Biology exam and aim to at least get a 4 on it. I’m pre-med too, and I’m so glad that I have the opportunity to AP out of it. It might be a headache to retake it. If you have the AP credit, you can AP out of it and take 2 upper-level bio courses, which you will probably need for your major anyway.

So let me get this right…I already got a 5 on Spanish Language, which counts for SPAN 222 and SPAN 223, and I got a 4 on English Langauge which counts for ENGL 121, so if I pass the writing test (I’m pretty sure I will) I will have all 4 needed credits? That way I won’t have to take the English Literature AP test.

Neither of the AP tests count for distribution credit. The writing test doesn’t either.

EDIT: After looking at the distribution list, the Spanish language test doesn’t get you distribution credit either, only the Spanish Literature does.

So you’re going to need to take 4 D1 classes here, regardless of whether you take the English AP test.

So I basically shouldn’t take the Lit test this May then because it won’t let me pass out of a required class? Otherwise it would just be a waste.

Yes. Just go with the Biology test. You can then retake BIOS 201/202 if you feel you want/need to, or take the credits from the AP test.
