AP & SAT II Credit at Cornell

When I stayed at Cornell in October, I spoke to students who had placed out of the Freshman Writing Seminar because they earned a score of 700 or above on the Writing SAT II. I was wondering if anyone had any information about this credit?

Also, do AP scores place you in a higher level course or exempt you from your requirement? (I.E. Would a 5 on Calc AB just force a student to take Calc BC?)

I have a 780 SAT II Writing score and 5's on both English AP Language and Composition tests and they only let me place out of one writing seminar.

There is no AB or BC in college, there is only calculas. A score of 5 in the AB means that you take cal III in cornell which is linear algebra.

To answer your question about AP scores: AP scores in some courses will expempt you from the requirement, while AP scores in some other courses will put you in higher level courses. It all depends on what your major is and what the requirement are for that major.

Calc. III at Cornell is not linear algebra. It's multivariable calculus. I would know since I took it. And took linear algebra too.

you are right!!! Calc. III is multi. I was actually talking about math 221 which is Linear Algebra and Differential Equations. If you get a five in the AB and want to continue with math then you take math 221.

no, you would take second semester calc, which is 112 or 122 (murder!!) you need to get a 5 on BC to place out of 111/112 and get to take 221.

Keep in mind for math you have to take a placement test no matter what, AP scores and all. There's 3 levels and if you place into the third group you're screwed into taking a math course regardless of AP credit. If you place into the 2nd, you're required to take a math course unless you have AP credit, and if you place into the first you're automatically exempt from math requirements unless you're an engineer or...some other major too but I forget. I placed into the 2nd group (due to my intoxicated state during the test haha), but thank the lord for my 5 on AP Calc, I am math free for the rest of my college career!

Thank you everyone!

Cornellbabe, was your 5 on Calculus AB or BC? (I'm taking BC this year and if it would end all math courses forever, I'd be much more motivated to go for the 5!)

calc AB, my school didn't offer BC. all you need is a 3 or higher in both AB and BC so totally go for it!

What if I have 5 on BC? What do I take next?

hmmm...I never took a placement test. I took Math 213 (Calc III) my first semester at Cornell and then Math 221 (Linear Algebra) my second semester. I had a 5 on Calc BC.
