is it true that if you take 5 ap's and score higher than 3 on three of the tests you can get monetary awards (i.e. scholarships) as well? i know College Board gives certificates and what-not (ap scholars), but is there any organization that will give money as well?

sigh with this economy, i'm desperately looking around for all possible scholarships.

No you get no monetary rewards from the College Board. They have some paper awards you receive for completing certain numbers of AP courses with certain marks. BUT there is NO MONEY attached to these.

The only "sort of money" that is attached to the AP courses is that some schools will award you credit for courses at their colleges. I know two students who graduated in three years because they had more than a year's worth of AP credits awarded from their college. This saved each student the cost of one year in college. But no money was given to the student!!

In addition, I just found the source of that tidbit I heard.

I checked online and looked up the Siemens Foundation AP Award, which mentions that you are qualified for monetary awards if you score 5's on AP science and math tests.

Ya, many of them accept AP credit. They may not accept AP credit for every AP course, but I am quite sure that all 8 of them accept some sort of AP credit.
