Will my application be affected by a bad AP score(s) at all?
You don’t have to list any AP scores on the application, but no, it won’t hurt, unless you have all 1’s and 2’s.
I don’t recall my daughter putting AP scores on any college application. I don’t think they play a role in admissions.
What school/applicants cation is asking for them?
Fret not…colleges are much more concerned about your grades in those classes as opposed to the AP tests.
Why is that?
- Doing well in a class shows you can learn over the year and work hard over a period of time. That is what they want in college.
- Not all HS have many APs.
- Many people take AP tests senior year which is too late for admissions
For example, Stanford says:
Students currently enrolled in AP courses are not required to submit AP scores as part of our admission process. AP scores that are reported are acknowledged but rarely play a significant role in the evaluation of an application. Grades earned over the course of a term, or a year, and evaluations from instructors who can comment on classroom engagement provide us with the most detailed insight into a student’s readiness for the academic rigors of Stanford.

I always think a good AP score can only help you, while a bad AP score can do nothing.
Right, if you have 5s and 4s it is only good to self report them. Not self reporting scores when you have them in hand merely confirms your score isn’t good enough to report.
Also, don’t have your scores automatically sent to a school unless you want them to see all of your scores. The score report will include all of your tests taken not just the one you are taking at that moment.
We don’t put AP scores on an application (I applied to colleges this year). AP/IB scores are given at orientation for class placements. and don’t really affect anything. You really can’t be rescinded because of low AP scores, either
While you did not put them on your app, some kids do. I have a kid who tests very well and attends a school that grades tough. She will have a slew of 5’s in classes she got B’s in. You bet we are putting those 5’s on her application.
