Unfortunately, I didn’t do great on my AP scores but my advisor is telling me to send them to show that I took the AP test. He thinks by not sending, it will show colleges that I only took AP to raise my GPA (since it adds 10%). What do you guys think? I’m so conflicted and I don’t know if I should send or not.
What does “not great” mean? Are you applying to extremely selective schools (below 30% acceptance rate?) If so, my recommendation is to submit 4s and 5s, think carefully about submitting 3s, and definitely DO NOT submit 1s and 2s.
@PikachuRocks15 not great as in 2s And I’m not doing extremely selective schools like Harvard or anything. many SUNY’s and CUNY’s. Most selective from my choice is probably NYU and Emory University. I should just not submit any 2s right? even if it isn’t showing that I did the AP test?
I wouldn’t send 2 scores.
NYU and Emory are selective schools, so it’s good that you’re applying widely (safeties, matches, and reaches,) as not everyone does.
A 2 is a failing grade, though it may give you placement at some schools. I would not report any 2s or 1s, as it’s better that the school thinks you didn’t take the exam (this is extremely common for elective AP courses or if you plan to retake the course in college) rather than giving them undeniable proof that you failed the test.
There’s no such thing as a “failing grade” on an AP. College Board defines a 2 as “Possibly qualified” with no grade equivalent. A 3 is a B-/C+/C.
I can’t speak to the SUNYs/CUNYs, but in general, the impact for NYU/Emory depends on what courses and how they relate to your possible major. If you go to their web sites, you’ll see how they phrase submitting AP scores.
BUT. This season, not every kid has the opportunity to take the whole range of std tests. There will be plenty of appplicants with some or all scores missing. Adcoms will have a way to review you, nonetheless.
And NYU/Emory will be looking at your transcript. They’ll see the rigor, the actual grades in classes, not just gpa.
That leaves the question, are you otherwise a strong candidate for NYU or Emory? Do you understand each college well enough to do a solid job on your app packages? If you’re borderline and these are reaches, imo, the 2s won’t help.
Make your best decision.
Sure there is. A 1 is a failing grade. A 2 will get you credit nowhere. Let’s not get bogged down in semantics.
College Board also defines APHG as an “introductory college-level course in human geography.” ??
Just because the CB says something does not make it true.
I think the idea is that since it’s an AP test, looking at is no credit or credit is better way of looking at it than pass/fail, given who you’re taking the test with. Anyway I wouldn’t send them if they’re below 3 as others have suggested, there’s a reason you can self-report them to colleges and not other tests (pre-covid).
That implies that an AP score of 2 would be something lower than C, like C- or D range (where D tends to be defined by colleges as “barely passing”, but often not sufficient to take a course that lists this course as a prerequisite or fulfill requirements for a major that requires this course). For this reason, do not expect to get credit, subject credit, or advanced placement in college for an AP score of 2.
An A grade in the AP course with an AP score of 2 does not reflect well on your high school’s AP course.
