AP Self Study

I'm sure that this has been brought up before, but is it possible to self study any APs? I don't mean like work on your own outside of class either, I mean totally independently. If anyone has, I was wondering what tests they did it for, and what books they used.
Any reply is greatly appreciated.

I self studied AP chem, AP physics C (both mech. and e&m), AP computer science AB, and AP calc BC totally independently (I had a teacher I could ask questions of for calc, but not a real class) and got 5's on all of them. I took AP us history (5) and AP english lang (4) in a real class.

Books:

AP chem - for textbooks, either Chemistry by Zumdahl or Chemistry by Raymond Chang (sp?) are good choices. I highly recommend Princeton Review AP chem, it's by far the best review book around. Memorize everything in PR AP chem and you'll get 4 or 5 for sure.

AP computer sci - dunno, I already knew how to program, so I just took old sample tests and reviewed the AP case study before.

AP calc - The text I used for the AP was really no good, I don't remember the author. I used Calculus by Stewart in college and that's very good. Assemble 3 or 4 review guides - they are all good in different ways. If I had to pick best, it would be Cliff's notes/Cliff's review AP calculus.

AP physics - the AP test does not follow that well with real college physics textbooks so I suggest you just get lots of review guides if you're already good with physics. Barrons physics C is excellent but really hard. If you master Barrons then you will do well.

AP history - I didn't self-study for this, but I might as well mention. Princeton Review AP history is nice but far easier than the actual test. Just assemble a variety of test guides, each has their own positives/negatives.

WOW jbusc!
you must really have great discipline to study so many APs by yourself!!

I heard that some online courses help, too, but I never dared o try...
Are they as good as indep. study?

I've heard about onoline courses too. I've wanted to look into it, but can't seem to find anything on the net.

jbusc: Thanks for the info. Unfortunately I'm going to take AP Physics, Comp, Calc, and History next year in class. I will look up the Chem though. Thanks

Is a student allowed to self-study and register for AP classes that her HS offers but she cannot fit into her schedule?

Our school allows it, however, you must get an approval by the Superintendant. Becareful of some of these AP courses, not all are regulated by CB and if they are not it is a waste of your time. Colleges from my limited knowledge only accept what CB certifies. AP Human Geography is not one

And no my kid take that course...he only did mainstream (gov, Euro, Calc. Lit.etc)
