If anyone has been a part of the AP Capstone program, can you tell me about your experience and if it was worth it/the benefits? I am currently in English 2 honors as a freshman and am either doing AP Seminar or English 3 honors next year.
AP seminar should not be thought of as a substitute for an actual English course.
I took AP Seminar last year as a junior and I got a 3. It all depends on who’s teaching the class but just know the class is a handful and not that much “hand-holding” in my case. I believe the class is worth it in the aspect you gain some familiarity in using scholarly resources like JSTOR and EBSCO and you get a feel on writing college papers but is it worth the stress and hassle? In my opinion, no. Just know that the AP Capstone program is fairly new and not all colleges accept it as credit (I learned it the hard way, just discovered that the college I committed to doesn’t take it as credit and I’m taking the AP Research portion now and I believe I’m just wasting my time because of that…). Just my thoughts.
I honestly think that it was not worth thinking, but of course, it depends on the teacher. Personally, my teacher considered AP Seminar as individual work so he gave very minimal help. Not only that, the atmosphere of my class did not feel welcoming, and I felt myself getting exhausted in that class. But, if your school’s teacher is very willing to get you to a good score, and you actually enjoy research and writing long papers, I would say go for it!
I agree w ucbalumnus- AP seminar is NOT an English course. However, many friends I have that took it said that it seriously helped their writing skills!!
