AP Spanish Drop

Hi guys, I am posting this at 10:34pm. My schedule correction form is due at school tomorrow in the morning so I need some accurate insight on this quickly.

I am planning to switch out of Spanish V/AP spanish (paired at my school for 1 year) for AP human geo this semester, and an honors class next semester(so no change in gpa potential).

I have taken spanish 1 2 3 4 and gotten A's in all of them. I can understand spanish when it is said slowly and can generally read and understand it. My problem comes when speaking.

Today, in my first day of AP spanish, I could only understand maybe 20% of what the teacher said (no english is allowed in the class). We have to give 2 minute speeches every 2 weeks (in spanish) turn in a weekly sheet detailing how we learned spanish that week by watching TV/reading newspapers. The teachers say AP spanish is one of the hardest AP's at our school and its well-known for its toughness among the students.

This semester, I have AP literature and comp., AP statistics, Honors Physics, and AP CompSci online. I feel like I can manage AP human geo a lot better than I can with ap spanish. Should i drop it?

Will it look bad that I took 4 years of spanish but didnt take AP spanish? (first choice = UC Berkeley, GPA = 3.8UW/4.8W, SAT = 2340, rank = top 3-4%)
Thanks in advance!!

If this makes any difference, I am looking to go into electrical engineering

I don’t think it’ll look bad seeing that you already took four years of Spanish. Go for it. Don’t worry.

As far as getting into Berkeley, I think your EC’s and ‘holistic’ factors will be more important than whether you took a 5th year of Spanish. Your SAT is obviously great. Not sure if the gpa you mentioned is the UC gpa or overall. I think Berkeley does look at your fully-weighted, uncapped gpa in the a-g courses, grades 10 and 11.

Although it shows a stronger program in a core area (fgn lang) and is more important than AP’s in electives (Comp sci, human geo), if you have 4 years of HS Spanish you should be okay even for your reaches. I wonder how come you aren’t prepared for AP though.

Drop the Spanish AP and move on. Four years of foreign language is enough for your goals.

If someday you really do need Spanish (or another foreign language) in real life, you can learn it then.
