Hello everyone! I'm currently a junior in analysis and trig (not the most difficult course, but I'm doing well in the class) and our counseling department just sent us course descriptions and requests for next year. I have the option to take either Honor's Pre Calc, AP Stats, or AP Calc AB. I'm planning on taking either AP Stats or AP Calc AB (taking Honor's Pre Calc over the summer). I'm going to be taking AP Econ and AP Gov and possibly AP Spanish and Advanced Composition as advanced classes in addition to this. I have above average grades but nothing spectacular but I'm also in sports, leadership, and am president of clubs.

My goal is to go to UCI as a nursing or pharmacy major so I was wondering which class to take. I've heard that Calc is better to have on an application but Stats is covered in nursing anyway? Which do you recommend taking?

This is discussed over and over here. Use search.

Sorry.

Thank you niceday! If I can ask, is your suggestion because colleges do prefer applicants who have taken Calc?

Calc is considered more rigorous.

AP Calc is also easier to use for credit once you enroll, at least from the AP policies of schools I’ve read. Calc I (roughly equivalent to AP Calc BC) is a narrow-, definite-enough subject that a math department can put faith in a student with a 4/5 knowing their way around the material.

If the sole criterion for selecting among these options is college admission, calc is the course. Colleges prefer applicants who have taken calc over those who have not. It is considered more rigorous than stats. If the applicant achieves a 4 or 5 on the AP test, he or she has likely fulfilled a pre-rec for higher level courses.

Although in general, Calc is preferred, either one could be a viable option for Nursing or Pharmacy. You might want to check with the programs you think you’ll be applying to, especially if direct admit, and see if they have a preference, instead of asking a bunch of random people on CC. A simple phone call will probably give you all the info you need, and they’ll be happy to talk to you about it.

AP Stats is not calc based, so may not translate into credits at your selected college. AP Calc will be more useful for almost every major I can think of.

Thank you for all of your answers! I really appreciate it.
