Which class would impress an engineering college which recommends 4 years of foreign language but only requires 2, AP Statistics or Spanish IV Honors?
How competitive is the school and what do they recommend for math? Are you thinking of majoring in engineering? I would look into the college courses for the major you are looking at and weigh the classes (including GE requirements) against Stats and foreign language. Which will help you more? If both, is there a way to back off another course, an elective or other?
If an engineering major requires statistics, it likely requires calculus-based statistics and does not allow AP statistics to fulfill it.
It is not common for engineering majors to require foreign language, but it one does, or you want to improve your proficiency in Spanish, it may be helpful to continue in it.
It all depends on where you are applying. Some schools have exams to place out of foreign language and obtain credit without taking ap spanish. Statistics will most likely not transfer but gives a good foundation to the topic before you take a calc based stats class. If you plan to study engineering ap’s that transfer help reduce the work load. Or you can take what interests you. One class is not going to sway admissions for engineering unless you chose not to take the highest math offered at your school or ditched physics.
@scubadive Thanks, I’m considering schools such as Villanova and VT, and planning on take AP Calc AB(school offers BC but I am unable to reach it, would this make a large impact?)
I do not know the answer to the calc question as there are so many variables. BC calc is better applying to engineering but that does not automatically get you in either. What is important is you are taking a calc class. Take what you enjoy your senior year and life has a way of working out.
Neither stat nor spanish is greatly related to engineering but I would go ahead and take ap stat so u can take one less required math class in college
Have you taken through at least AP Calc AB (or will have by the end of HS)? That is the most important Math.
Does the school have a Foreign lang requirement in college?
I would take the Spanish. Stats is not needed to prepare for Engineering.
I would make every attempt to meet the recommended coursework for the colleges and stay with Spanish. Especially if you are considering some top tier colleges, keep in mind that many applicants will have met all of the school’s recommended coursework.
That said, I don’t think one course will make or break your application.
