Hello! I’m currently a junior taking Spanish 4H and choosing an elective class for next year. The options I have currently are between AP Spanish Lang or AP Statistics. I’m leaning towards majoring in Econ so Stats would definitely be a plus for that; I would be doing double-math though since I am also taking AP Calc BC next year too. For language, at least from what I understand, I don’t need to continue to AP Spanish since I have already reached the fourth level of foreign language, but I have not met a lot of people that haven’t taken an AP foreign language, and I’m just scared that it would look like I’m dropping some rigor with foreign language, which is a core subject.
I believe I prefer Stats as a subject more but I also think that it’s kind of a waste if I don’t just finish off my language requirement with an AP language class. I’m open to any advice or suggestions! Thanks so much.
If you’re leaning towards econ and stats then take AP stats. You’ve had 4 years of Spanish. AP Spanish is not more rigorous instruction on language it is more culture. You’ve gone far enough in language, go further in math now.
If you are aiming for the most selective colleges, they may prefer the more rigorous choice, and that choice may affect how your counselor rates your course choices and overall academic strength. Have you asked your counselor about the latter aspect?
Economics majors often have to take calculus based statistics in college anyway. And many colleges have foreign language graduation requirements, so attaining a higher level in high school can help with that.
Four years in a language is sufficient for any school. If you are more interested in Stats than Spanish culture, go ahead and take it.
My child chose AP Stats, APCalc AB and AP Bio and did Spanish 4 H. Wanted to major in something science related and had good results with college apps so far. I think you should take AP Stats even if you have to take stats in college, having taken it in high school will make it easier for you.
