AP Studio Art vs. AP Econ/Spanish 4

I'm an upcoming junior.

Right now I have AP Biology, AP English Language, AP Calculus BC, General Chemistry and AP Psychology down for sure. That's 4 APs already! However, I think these won't be a challenge for me as they are subjects I have an aptitude for and love. (I think I can maintain a 4.0 UW with these courses)

I want two frees so I need to choose between AP Studio Art, AP Economics, or Spanish 4. This is my junior year so I know I have to choose my classes wisely while maintaining a good GPA.

Out of the three, I love/am best at Art, but I've heard the course is VERY time consuming...One piece per week. I think this'll affect my GPA negatively and drain time from my extracurriculars. Spanish 4 (My third language) isn't necessary because most colleges require 3 years of a foreign language, which I already have. AP Econ is an AP that I was originally planning on taking senior year, but I've heard the workload is pretty lax.

What do you think is the best course for my last spot? Thanks for answering guys.

What is your intended major?

If it’s not economics-related, I would save AP Econ for senior year, leaving it between AP Art and Spanish. Personally, I would go for Spanish because you can always leave art for senior year whereas you can’t really go into a higher-level Spanish without breaking the sequence, but if you are very passionate about art and/or have a major that is strongly related to art, I would go for AP Art.

Thanks for your reply!! I’m planning on doing something medical.

Why is a third language so important? My counselor stresses that I need 4 years of spanish, but I’ve already taken AP Chinese, got a 5 and I’ve already had three years of spanish so I feel like I don’t need it. I got an A- in Spanish 3, so I really don’t want it to drag down my GPA again…However, if it’s that important, i’d definitely take it.

I’m passionate about art…but I don’t know whether or not it’s worth it!

It’s not so much that a third language is that important, but it’s more along the lines of “Hey, you’ve already completed 3 years of Spanish, you’ve only got 2 years to go, so you might as well finish it off”. I wouldn’t say that your first three years of Spanish would go to waste if you simply stopped taking Spanish, but it kinda makes sense for you to finish what you’ve started so you can make use of what you’ve done, you know what I mean?

That’s just my opinion, anyways. If you really, really like art, then you should definitely go for it.

Hmmm… This is tough! You have a large amount of APs in your junior year alone, and you said you took AP Chinese, which means you’ve taken more. How many APs have you taken prior to your junior year?

* I read you got a 5 on your Chinese AP exam, so I’m assuming you’re good at languages. Correct me if I’m wrong. *

Right off the bat, I think you should eliminate AP economics from your junior year choices.
Spanish should be kept, because languages are always less rigorous classes that are easy to get good grades in, while still looking impressive. Spanish is such a widely known language in America, and a good grasp of it will always look great.
Art should stay because, although it is a rigorous AP class, you love doing it. If you love it, doing lots of work for it shouldn’t be a problem. Plus, art is a great way to let out stress, and 5 AP classes would definitely bring you that.

I’m going to put myself in your shoes. If I had to choose between taking Italian 4 and… well, I don’t like art, so let’s say there was an AP Drama class. If I had to choose between the two while having an extremely rigorous schedule of APs, I would still choose Drama, hands down. Theatre is something I love, and I wouldn’t mind doing some extra work to support my education in something I love.

There will always be a side of you saying, “Why are you doing this? Taking a language would be so much easier,” but I think making your life a bit harder for something you love is worth it.

You can always take AP Economics your senior year, but I really think Spanish or AP Studio Art would be better choices. If I were you, I would take Studio Art, but Spanish would be just as beneficial.

Good luck!
