AP studio art

So my school offers AP Studio Art ( the course title and description does not specify if it’s 2D or 3D specific and idk if it’s supposed to be like that but I thought I’d mention that now just in case) and it does NOT state that you need to have taken any art classes at school to take it, but there is a tab that says " teacher approval" ( not sure how much I can trust it though since 60% of " teacher approved" courses aren’t actually regulated.) as a pre-req. Anyways I do enjoy art but I have not taken any formal classes since I was in 7th grade, and I am afraid that my technique won’t be good enough to do well in the course. I am willing to work hard of course, and I do have the time the class requires me to have, it’s just confidence that I am struggling in. I know for 2D you can submit photography which I feel much more confident in but I mean it’s an art class not a photography class so…

Is it worth joining???

Are you good at art?

What grade are you in and what are the alternatives?

Probably not if you have no HS art experience. Undoubtedly the teacher will want to see a portfolio for approval, so she’s your best source of info.

Having submitted a photography portfolio for AP Studio art, I can tell you that IMO you’re really going to want an advanced photography course and/or an instructor that’s knowledgeable about photography.

What grade are you in?
Can you take a “regular” art class next year?
If not, talk to the teacher about what they would require for you to be placed in the class.

For example, could you put together a portfolio of art over the summer and they could decide that that point if you could get in? Otherwise take a regular art class.

Check that it isn’t a 2 yr commitment too, I think that some schools require that.

Also look at examples of the portfolios and see if that is something you are up to:

Nope, no two year commitment required, also for the record, I’m an incoming senior. There are regular art classes at my school but it is only focused on drawing so really it’s a basic drawing class. Those classes also fill up extremely quickly since most people at my school will take it for the fine art credit so I’m not even sure that there will be space open by the time I get to signing up for the class. There is this one semester course titled independent art studies or something like that but it also requires teacher approval ( no specific pre-reqs listed).

I could work on a portfolio, I’m just unsure if I need to make it a complete photography portfolio or if I need to incorporate other things such as drawings or paintings to show diversity? I want to do photography for the year and based on sample works I feel like that may actually be doable since I have experience in photography and editing.

Find out whether you are required by the school’s course to submit the portfolio to the College Board. As with AP exams, at some high schools, the AP portfolio submission is recommended but not required.

You can do a entire photography portfolio. My school actually splits up AP Photography from AP Studio Art 2D and 3D, but we still submit the Studio Art 2D porfolio. I got a 4 with no prior photography experience but I did have a photography focused teacher and class.

If you want to see examples of photography portfolios, there are some good websites online.

Anyway, talk to your Art teacher and ASK!

The answer can be Yes, No, or “Let’s see what you can do first”.
