For my AP classes next year, I plan on taking AP Euro, AP Calc BC, and AP Chem classes + exams.

But when should I try to take AP Macro/Microeconomics, AP Music Theory, AP Comp Sci AB and AP Art Hist? My school doesn't have classes for any of these so I'll have to self-study ... should I try taking these during my sophomore year (07-08) in addition to 3 other APs?

Just as an aside, I REALLY dislike cramming and taking a whole load (5+) of APs in one given year ... I liked to spread them out a bit.

Also, does anyone know what the deal is with AP WH? Harvard doesn't say whether or not they give credit for the AP exam for AP World Hist ...

iam a soph and i took ap calculus bc and ap worldhist last week... u mean u re self studying those three aps.. yeah.. spread them out teh whole year.. do not cram.. I hate cramming too. And use Barrons for CAl.. I used Barrons. PR and Petersons.. for Barrons, there are just a lot of practice tests, so it's very practical..

I think it would be better to see how to take AP tests before you go right in and self-study for five more. Maybe one or two, but you're risking the grades at that point because the first time you take the AP tests, it's pretty overwhelming, no matter how smart you are. See what it's like the first year...then spread the rest around. That's what I would do.

But maybe you're different...or maybe you've taken some already...so it really depends on the person.

Aptitude isn't that good of an indicator of ability in AP classes or on AP exams...trust me, I've seen so many very smart kids do horrible in AP classes, and on their respective exams.

I think work ethic is a better indicator of success.

Thank you for all your help! And even though I am a sharp student, I do agree with you christalena2 on that fact that I'll be exhausted from so many APs when I first take them in 10th grade.

That is a LOT of tests to take as a sophomore...I took two this year (soph), one self-study, and was BURNT OUT. Still am, as a matter of fact. Good luck. :)

I took AP Comp Sci, AP Stats, and AP Bio this year as a sophmore. I found Biolittle easier because I had already had interest in it and studied a lot for my SAT II Bio test. So,for example, If you already play an instrument, maybe music theory might be applicable for you to take sophomore year.

What benefit do you get from doing this; most colleges cap the amount of AP credit you can use, and its been established here that colleges are more excited to see you took the AP class, rather than the test.

Redknight, my school only offers a very limited selection of AP classes (around 10 or so). I want to show colleges that even though I don't have much of an opportunity to take AP classes, I still took many AP tests + did well on them.

Sometimes I really don't know why I take all the APs

I took two as a freshman. AP Stats & AP Gov't & Politics. I ended up self-studying for the AP Gov't one since I kind of skipped out on the online course.

This year I took AP US history & AP CALC AB. I self-studied for the Calc.

I signed up for 5 next year, since junior year is when they really open up to us at my school. I might also self-study some. It's not really certain since my entire schedule is up in limbo right now until, I get a reply back from the U of MN for PSEO.

I really have no idea what the colleges will think about the self-study AP's.
I think we take all of these AP courses & self-study for some also for a variety of reasons.

Impressing colleges
Getting college credit
Finding more of an academic challenge
Impressing our selves
Testing our smarts
Impressing those around us
Personally feeling the adrenaline rush of speed reading AP Gov't text-books & learning helter-skelterly about Integrals in late April since you couldn't help but procrastinate.
And the list goes on.

I only know my freshman scores since I am a sophmore.

I got a 4 on the gov't exam. Which I was happy went since considering the stress of me trying to learn all that material in such a short time. The exam actually felt pretty good even though I didn't have an idea about what a DBQ was. I think I spent to long on my essays, and didn't get to finish my last one.

AP Stats I got a 4 also but since that was the exam from hell, I felt pretty good about that since I totally bs'd the free response part. We have semester classes in my district & I had stats second semester so we didn't have time to learn everything. We only learned abou chi^2 tests the friday before the exam which was on tuesday & didn't have time to practice. Then it turns out the main focus for the FRQ was Chi-2. Should have seen the looks on the faces of my classmates.

AP CALC AB & AP USH hopefully a 4/5 but have no idea since the FRQ's on each test hit me like a ton of bricks. Especially the Us. History DBQ. Can one say BS.

I am a little saddened since I won't have the perfect record of 5's that some people here have.

sophomore year i took bio, calc ab, and euro. i thought it was pretty easy to learn the material, but i also had probably some of the BEST teachers possible.

You all are crazy. I took Stats and Euro my sophomore year, which is almost unheard of at my school, and I was pretty exhausted at that point. Junior year was four APs, which is was just awful.

I wouldn't suggest taking AP classes and exams just for the sake of it; only do what interests you.
