AP Tests

I noticed on the Amherst website that one can’t receive credit for AP Tests. I also read that it’s possible to be exempted from intro. level courses in certain departments. Can anyone clarify which departments these are?

You are correct; doesn't give credit for AP tests. Each department has its own policies on what you can place out of. I would check out the websites of the relevant departments and see what they say.

And it isn't just AP's that can place you out of lower level classes. D had 2 yrs of German on top of AP Spanish in HS, and German dept. moved her to second level German class, even tho AP wasn't taken. Definitely depends on the dept.

"Definitely depends on the dept."

yea...so anyone know which departments these are?

Really, any department. Most professors, if you talk to them, will sign off to let you take their non-intro class as long as you sound convincing. The science, math, and foreign language departments are the most formal about it - many of them will have placement tests in the first couple weeks.

I took the right AP test to place into the math class that was right for me, but during orientation they stressed that the 'requirements' for placing out of classes were really just 'guidelines' and that they wouldnt stop anyone from trying to take a math class. The math department even lets you drop down to a lower course after add/drop if you are in over your head.
