AP vs Honor Classes

My son is trying to decide if he should take AP or honor English in his junior year. The teacher for AP English historically has a pretty tough grading curve, some kids only get B (high 80s) in his class but can get a 5 on actual AP test. Our school don’t give much weight on AP courses but only report grades based on 100 point scale, i.e. 89 in AP English, 95 Honor English, etc.

What looks ‘better’? regular school grade 89 AP English & 5 on AP test vs. 95 Honor English grade on your transcript. Any comments or suggestion is greatly appreciated!

@biomeds Is he taking other APs junior year?

Which will he benefit more from? Which will he learn things that he still needs work on? That is what education is about -not about looking good for college. By the way, a student can get a 5 on some AP multiple choice tests by getting about 65% correct if they nail the essays. So in a decent school, a B student should be able to get a “5”. So my comments are about remembering that education is about learning. And, by the way, be still my heart…Not a B! Oh no!

@suzyQ7, he is going to take AP Calculus BC, Chem and Physics; then either AP Eng Comp or Honor Eng.

@lostaccount, he will definitely learn more in AP Eng Comp class but may have a 80s on his transcript for his college application :-*

Protect the GPA - I would take the honors course since he’ll already have 3 APs next year.
