Is it silly to take an SAT II in a subject for which you will be taking the AP exam?

no. You do need two SAT IIs in most colleges to meet the minimum requirements.
AP is a way to avoid taking a class when you get to college.

Okay. Do AP scores and SAT II scores essentially tell colleges different things?

Wouldn’t they both demonstrate your knowledge of a particular topic?

Yes, but the different curves show different things. On an AP test, a person who scores 65% and a person who scores 100% would both get 5’s (on most AP tests). On a Subject Test, a person who scores 65% and a person who scores 100% would definitely not both get 800’s.

As the previous poster said, the two tests measure a person differently in the subject knowledge.

You do have to take SAT IIs whether you take APs or not in order to fulfill your application requirements for many colleges. So you are going to go out of your way to find a subject where you wont be taking an AP?

There are people taking as many as 4-5 SAT IIs to prove that they are good enough on their application. However, if they dont take AP tests for those subjects, they miss out on college credits altogether which allows them to reduce the course load by a semester or two based on how many APs are taken. So one test is used to admit you, and the other is used to give you a credit once admitted.

Yea but at really competitive colleges, APs are used for admissions too.
