AP World History Self Study

I am signed up for World History Honors next year, and i was wondering if i could self study for AP World since my school doesn't offer it.
If so what books would i use, reviews etc. and would the Honors class provide me any help for it.

awkward… LOL

I’m self studying for the AP, from a good world history class that doesn’t prepare students for the AP, with the Barons book. The World AP covers a huge time period which can make it somewhat hard to self study, depending on what you cover in class. If I were you, I would wait till February or so next year and see how much you’ve learnt/are going to learn that is covered in the AP and then approach the teacher about whether students have taken the AP in past and their results or just to clarify how much of the AP stuff you’re going to cover and then decide if you have the free time and determination to make up the difference. Good luck!

Stearns’s World History AP edition/Barron’s AP World History

Our class uses Bentley and Ziegler’s Traditions and Encounters as well as Stearn’s World History AP Edition.

I took normal World History my freshman year and World History AP my sophomore year, so I’ve had two years. The main differences between the classes would be that AP goes into a slightly deeper detail, and seems to be focused less on European history and more on Asian and African history.

Heck, very little (less than 20% of the AP exam) of AP World History is European-based, which might be somewhat different because European and American history is pretty much what you’re taught all throughout elementary and middle school, so you’re not really as familiar with the material. We’ve probably spent more than 40% of our class on just China and India combined. Also, remember that on the AP World History exam - very little of it is on ancient history. Despite the fact that the class technically spans over 10,000 years of history, realistically, about 75% of the exam takes place in the last milenium.

I heard the AP World History curriculum was changing next year.

Nope, this is actually the first year that the new curriculum was put into effect.

Here’s some information from the CollegeBoard website if you’d like.

We use Tradition and Encounters too.

I think Traditions and Encounters is terrible, but I don’t know the alternatives.

Really? It’s hardly perfect, but it seems to do a good job as a supplementary text to a comprehensive history class. And this is coming from someone that wanted to throw the textbook out the window after reading 50+ pages last night for a test today. It’s online resources are good too.

Our school uses The Earth and Its Peoples, 2nd edition. I dislike it, we need one of the newer editions. Barron’s is good for self study, I don’t know what to suggest for your main text, though.
