Apartment Living #101 How to deal with a barking dog 2 doors down

We have been living in our new apartment for 10 days. A dog barks frequently down the hall. Do I speak to neighbor, or management anonymously? I knew that dogs were allowed here, but I assumed that meant dogs who knew the rules. I assume that there are others who hear the dog as well. Advice?

Talk to your neighbor directly to start with. I’d ask what they want you to do when the dog barks – do they want you to text or call their cell phones? :D. Seriously – I text my apartment neighbor (next door when his dog is out of hand and barking non-stop). I will let a few woofs go (my rule in my head is 5 minutes, unless I am trying to sleep, then shorter). And we are still on good terms in the hallway and elevator (partly because I do like the dog, and stop to pet her).

My new neighbors on the other side threw a loud party right after moving in (in violation of building rules). I did not knock on their door or contact management – I waited until I caught them in the hall a week or so later, and said, “Hey, not sure if you are aware of the rules. I didn’t want to knock on your door during the party or anything, thought I would just mention that quiet hours start at 10, and it was pretty loud over in my place.” I was sort of apologetic (not confrontational), and they responded really well. They said it had been louder than they intended, and didn’t plan to do it again. Again – we chat in the hall and I talk to their dog, too.

I think starting with the “Gosh, I hate to bring it up because I know it is a challenge to fix this, but your dog has been barking a lot when you are not home. I’d like to figure out how to let you know when it is going on.” If it is an ongoing problem after you try to deal with it directly, then contact management.

Sounds reasonable. Thanks!

Good advice. Curious about the outcome . . .

Its been a lot better. They spoke with owner.
