D and her friend are thinking about moving into an apartment next year. I was wondering if anyone has any opinions/insight regarding the apartment complexes near the school. They looked at several including University Courtyard, Continental and Christiana. I am looking for something for them that is safe, in close proximity to the school and would like something that is fully furnished. Any opinons, information and insight would be appreciated, including any commments regarding the three that I mentioned. Thank you!

Studio Green and Ivy Hall are two other options. Studio Green has optional furnished units and utilities are included. Ivy Hall is not furnished and utilities are not included.

thank you so much. I will look into them. do you know anything about the three that I mentioned in the previous post?

Christiana is UD dorm housing. We looked into the Courtyards, and thought they were very nice - but our daughter wanted a place of her own and it was a bit pricey, if I remember correctly it was $1075 per month. We were looking for something under a $1000. I also researched everything and kinda found that the Courtyards were more of a party place - and that is what our DD wanted to avoid, and one of the reasons she disliked the dorm. In any event if you want info on where our DD lives you can private message me.

Thanks for asking the question lucky&blue my D is also looking off campus for an apartment,I was told that ivy hall is a party place did you hear differently UDMom?

Are there any off-campus places that are NOT party (drinking) places? While some kids may move off-campus to avoid the party scene, I wonder if more (most?) do so to avoid the on-campus restrictions (which are obviously not enforced as well as they should be).

Maybe I am overgeneralizing. My son wants to move to the Christiana Towers apartments next year. I would be happy finding something close to campus with a good non-party atmosphere that will cost less than on-campus housing. Is that an impossible combination?

Although I am not an expert on anything college after only 2 months, I dont think so. My daughter and (to be) roommate, both in honors program living in the honors dorm. Daughter finds that although it is an honors dorm there are kids hanging out a lot in the hallways which is very distracting since she likes to do her work in her room. Her time is very limited with a demanding major and playing on a sport team with several hours a day of practice and travelling almost every weekend. Also, her roommate, also honors, is in and out a lot with friends, sometimes late at night when D is trying to do work. I think that an apartment with someone who shares similar study habits and philosophies will be a better environment for studying than even the honors dorm. The funny thing is D is not a wallflower and likes to have a good time every so often (although she has only gone out once since school started) but is amazed at how often the kids in honors go out and how noisy her hall is. Also, D and her (to be) roommate are looking at 2 bedroom apartments so they will each have their own bedroom and space. For us, this seems like a good move. I hope we are right.

As far as the money goes, I think it is similar. The apartments might be more money but you are not required to have a meal plan. I think food will be much cheaper without a full meal plan.

I think what it comes down to is the preferred roommate (or apartment-mate) has to share similar habits and attitudes with regard to sleeping, socializing and studying. My son tells me that many kids start the weekend on Thursdays (including his roommate), but he chooses not to. So Thursday evenings, he can get a lot of work done because his roommate’s not there. He also prefers working in his room.

He also tells me his roommate is frequently up later than him, which is odd, bcause his roommate has 8am classes most days, and my son mostly has later mornings (only 1 8am). He hasn’t mentioned anything about hall noise, but he’s in a end-of-hall corner room so maybe the noise isn’t as bad.

I have no idea what his plans are for next year’s living, but I do know he’ll be living with someone other than his current roommate.

Do most kids move off after freshman year?

I dont know but I do hear that many sophomores move in to Christiana Towers which are on campus apartments. I have heard that Christiana is mostly sophomores meaning another move after sophomore year. I would like it if my daughter and her future roommate could move in somewhere where we dont have move them in and out every year (since most of the apartments off campus have 12 month leases) that woudl be optimal

My D goes to art school in Boston and almost everyone moves off after Freshman year. The good part is, she’s now been in the same apartment 2 years in a row, so we didn’t have to bring back and forth a year’s worth of stuff. She just left what she didn’t need there over the summer. One of her roommates stayed there for the summer so the place was lived in, and she ended up going back early to got a headstart in job hunting.

Her apartment came unfurninshed. Her roommates had things from home for the common areas. We bought her a new bed, and some basics at a thrift shop. We got a chest of drawers and a desk for next to nothing. ALso, when the leases turn over (which in Boston is 9/1) it is not uncommon for students to put furniture they no longer need out for trash pickup, so the kids walk around around and actually find furniture that way (and it’s free). My D found a bookcase, chair and night table that way. I don’t know if it’s similar near the UDel campus.

We also found an apartment + food to be a cheaper than the dorms + mealplan.

DD has lived on campus all 4 years and has many friends who do. Many that live off campus as well. She is living in the Towers this year. It’s a very different environment from the dorms. Many foreign students live there. Some sororities has girls living in the Towers, mostly clustered in certain areas. Because they are apartments, there isn’t a whole lot of interaction among residents, so I don’t know what the sophomore issue would be. You don’t have to have a meal plan in the Towers. DD has the 50 meal block plan because she meets friends who live elsewhere on campus for lunch. You don’t have to leave during breaks either. They started charging to stay in the dorms over winter break but it is waived for the Towers this year. She never had a big desire to live off campus figuring that she’ll have to be responsible for herself for a lot of years and there’s no need to rush into it. Living in the Towers is a great transition for her.

Is the move-in day for the Towers the same as the other dorms?

Yes, same as the other buildings.

misterbill:

My daughter has no difficulty with parties or drunken behavior at her complex, which is near the campus. It is also more cost effective for us, so - yes - it is a possible combination.

Isn’t Studio Green where the girl from White Plains was murdered? I can’t remember her name, but I read the story a while back. I don’t know how superstitious you are, but I think you can check it out in the local newspaper. Someone told me and I found the article.

The only murder that I am aware of is the one that occured in the Springford Garden Apartments. The gal was not a student at UD, was disabled, five months pregnant and killed by a minor…

Towne Court recently changed ownership and is now Studio Green.

I guess that the case remains unsolved since that was in 2005. Goodness, what a shame.

It did not go unsolved, fortunately. It has been successfully prosecuted as well. Her family and friends have also started a foundation in her memory, “dedicated to promoting peaceful and safe living environments in off-campus college communities nationwide.” Very tragic…wonderful that they’ve honored her in this way.
