Tell me if this is feasible. The boyf and I are trying to find a pad for about $400-$500 a month for the each of us. I know that's on the low side, but I'm willing to forgo having a kitchen(ette). Laundry facilities is a little bit harder to give up. Umm... I doubt we'll be able to find a roommate who wants to live with a couple, and it's so hard to find two other people so we can live in a 2BR, 2RR type thing. I don't know. I'm a total noob at this thing. Oh yeah, location. I heard south of Wilshire gets cheap? I just want to be in the range of the Big Blue.

Any advice? Thoughts? Comments? Totes appreciated.

(No "are you sure you want to live with your boyfriend" type comments. I've gotten enough, thank you.)

Uh, also. Hoping to move in by summer? Is it possible, because like, aren't people moving out and stuff? I should be looking now, shouldn't I? How can I get started?

I don't think it gets that much cheaper south of Wilshire. I mean some people that I know live in Palms and are paying roughly ~$1250 for a 1Bed/1Bath apartment. I was paying ~$1400 on Veteran last year for a 1BR apartment.

Best bet is to find a studio apartment. I have seen some for ~$900 with no kitchen (includes hot plates?), and some at $1100 w/kitchen. You'll also have to take into account the utilities and misc. fees, so it ends up being more expensive. Go to Craiglist and get a feel what's out there. However, I would recommend you go walking around because you'll find more places that way. Good luck.

Just a question but anyone know anyone living on gayley that might be willing to transfer over their apartment to a friend and I for next year? =D

Grass: Walk around where? I already gleaned the CL & walk-around tips from some other thread. I'd like some tips on where to start, like, specific tips.

Plus, I'll put in a good word for you with the Madame Lin. ;)

When I looked I walked up and down Strathmore, Veteran, Ophir, Gayley, etc. You'll see "For Lease" signs outside the apartment complexes, so inquire about vacancies and rates. I haven't really explored south of Wilshire for apartments, but it should be the same thing. Just know that the application is $25-$30 each for background/credit check. You'll have to ask about down payment amount, which is usually one month rent. Also, check if it comes with parking, some places charge extra for it, and others don't have any at all.

It's not that difficult. It took me one whole day last year to check out places. I just picked one, applied, payed fees, and a couple days later I was notified that it was mine. I think I did it in June before I moved out here, by the way. Hell, I did a quick search on CL and found a posting for a studio w/kitchen for $1100 on Glenrock or $895 w/o kitchen.

I don't know what type of specific tips you are looking for?

IDK, go look in Palms. Where in Palms? Someone will have to give you more info on that, sorry. IIRC, someone told me they were paying ~$300 a month for a room in an old lady's house. I think it included utilities. Some people have all the luck, but that person also spends an hour each way on the bus.

Oh yeah, location. I heard south of Wilshire gets cheap?

It's not cheaper; you just get more room for what you pay for.

You can find places in Palms and Santa Monica for less than $500. I remember
seeing leases for as low as $350-400. As Grasspuppet says, the bus ride is long, so take that into consideration.

Well, namaste was talking about this old lady in Bel Air who would rent some some rooms in her mansion. You'd pay back with....ahem favors ahem
So that's free.

Why not try 424 Kelton? About $2000 for 2 br, 2 bath, utilities covered.

lolol. yes pink, maybe your bf can give favors for a room in bel air.

haha nothing in santa monica is that cheap. its even more expensive than westwood! but palms and mar vista yes. and big blue bus is pretty conveinent. you'd be away from campus though youd be a true commuter :(

From me you mean. God pink it's a ing god-awful idea. I'm sorry but I won't * at you if you **** this up later.

Go ahead pink - try and get your folks to cosign that ****ing contract - see if they'll be OK having his name on it. See if they visit you and find him there. See if your dad would be OK dropping by to pick you up for the weekend and finding him there. Good luck with that.

Yeah I sound like a complete ***** but I'm being realistic here. It's like going without a prenuptial agreement given the circumstances. But if you want to **** up your year - go ahead. I'll stop here.

No, I worry about that *, too. But it's not like I haven't thought about it. But now that I know they cosign that *, I don't know what to do.

Did you have to be such a Debbie Downer on this thread, though? What ever happened to telling me this **** privately?

Technically, the co-signer(s) don't have to be your parents. It can be anyone that is willing to take responsibility over the lease if you fail to do so, or something to that effect. I had a relative sign for me. Just make sure to pay the rent.

Then again, if your parents are the type to ask questions, then they'll find out about the living situation.

I would imagine so. I mean, most Westwood residents are students. It only makes sense the apartment's management would require a cosigner for reassurance. You don't need a cosigner per resident, at least I don't recall it being mandatory. One cosigner is probably enough. Again, I could be wrong on this, so check with the management.
