<p>Now that the 2 day limit is up, we're free to rip these questions apart!!!</p>

<p>A) The sewage upgrade question from primary to secondary. </p>

<p>B) Energy consuption by family using the shower. </p>

<p>C) Thinning of stratospheric ozone over Antarctica, reasons and chemicals involved. </p>

<p>D) Urbanization. What is a characteristic of the urban microclimate that leads to higher pollution? In what ways does the local hydrologic cycle differ?</p>

<p>i said that primary was large filters to filter out solid wast and garbage.
secondary i said a system of filters?? had no clue</p>

<p>i think i did ok on the math for B</p>

<p>C was a little confusing. i said CFC's deplete ozone and are in frion and plastics..but im not sure if they are in plastic?</p>

<p>had no how they break down the ozone. i said they bond and break down lol</p>

<p>i said all the buildings and ppl lead to heat island effect.
affect water cycle bc all the cement makes all the water runoff and pollute.</p>

<p>Hmm... I said that secondary treatment was using biological organisms. </p>

<p>CFCs break ozone when its parts bond with the ozone right?</p>

<p>lol i think secondary does use organisms such as bacteria..
thats kinda what i said about cfc's soo im hoping they arent looking for too much more than that.</p>

<p>to decrease energy costs without conserving water, i put turning off the lights and using cold water (so heating needs are decreased).</p>

<p>For secondary treatments, I said bacteria consume nitrates. That is what my review book said. However, my teacher, textbook, and other books say that bacteria consumer organic molecules.
I also got 500 days for the math problem; it was supposed to be 1000.
PS:??????????????Does anyone know for sure the general scale for 5's????????????</p>

Secondary Treatment - Definitely inserting bacteria-rich slurry into aeoration tank to decompose orgainc wastes
, and i wrote down chlorine is used to finally disinfect sewage containing, say, plant nutrients, NO3-.</p></li>
<li><p>I think I totally messed up on the calculation part; it's so embarrassing given that it was indeed a very easy question.
For the energy conservation part, everyone could write something if he or she had common sense, right?</p></li>
<li><p>I myself also answered CFC is the main culprit of ozone depletion. CFC, when released into the atmosphere, serves as a strong oxidizing agent that break down ozone molecules into O and O2??
As for SOURCE part.. use of cosmetic products such as spray and spreading fertilizers (Organochlorine ones..), I think the latter response is flawed though.</p></li>
<li><p>Didn't really understand the CHRACTERISTICS of Microclimate in urban areas. I mistakenly scribbled HEAT ISLAND in part (a), which was simply asking what difference in temperature is there btw urban and rural areas..
My contents were all over the place when answering government's action question.. Water cycle disruption? A decrease in evapotranspiration by plants and an increase in precipitation because of rising temperature; I didn't really elaborate the second item, though...</p></li>

<p>-For the conserving water one, is it okay if I put that they can conserve water by installing more efficient toilets? It said PRACTICAL measures but I'm not sure if installing new toilets is very practical.</p>

<p>-On the question about how urban hydrologic cycle is different I put that there is less transpiration in urban areas so there is less precipitation in urban areas and that water is filtered in man-made ways in urban vs. natural ways such as wetlands in the rural areas. Are these okay?</p>

b) first is removed through physical means like a strainer, second is by natural bacteria decomposing the sludge
c) excess solid waste from step 1 needs to go somewhere, this could leach
d) landfills can leach, spreading onto agri. lands could contaminate crops w/fecal bacteria
e) e.coli, anaerobic decomposition w/ air pumps to speed it up
f) clean water and air act</p>

c) take shorter showers, collect water from rain gutters to water lawn and garden
d) insulation and window coverings (passive cooling)</p>

<p>3) cfc's - aerosols and plastics manufacturing

d) can get into lungs because of small size, can disrupt photosynthesis</p>

b) less vegetation + more rock (albedo) that will store and dissipate more heat

e) rural areas may have a lot more natural filtration + use wells instead of city water</p>

<p>I'm not sure what the last step is. I put the first one on the test and I found a website that says it is that way but my textbook and wikipedia say it is the second one.</p>

<p>ClO + O -> Cl + O2
---or---
ClO + O3 -> Cl + 2O2</p>

<p>So in the end the Cl atom is free again and can convert more O3 into O2.</p>
