Appalachian State Admissions

Got letters from WRC and Honors College today. Accepted into WRC and wait listed for Honors College. 4.6 GPA and 30 ACT. Anyone have stats for those accepted to Honors College?

@Rio123 It does not have scholarships associated with it. In fact, it has an extra $125 surcharge because of the activities that they do that are above and beyond the normal dorm life. However, it is a group of quirky, intelligent students who get to live together for two years and take alternate general educational courses that are more interdisciplinary than the regular gen ed. I’ve heard it HIGHLY praised in a lot of locations on the internet. Additionally, they usually create a Facebook page for those who have been accepted, so if they do, join that and see if this group of students feels like a group you’d love to spend time with. Also, it has a whole section of the App State website dedicated to it, so maybe start there if you want to learn more! Good luck on your decision.

mi5kids Thanks for your response!

I received a Scholars Day invitation around January 27th to interview for the Wilson Scholarship at Appalachian State and I have three friends who were invited to interview for the Chancellor’s. Does anyone have any advice about the interviews? Even though I’m not interviewing for the Chancellor’s, I’m curious for my friends. Are they purely based on test scores or, if you make it to the interview, do they consider the whole person?

Also, @Rio123 I visited the Watagua Residential College, talked to the director, and toured it with current students. It is an integrative learning experience. The classes are very philosophical and discussion-based. There is a small classroom on almost every floor for the Watagua classes and the building is connected to the professors’ offices. All the students have to each lunch together in the Watagua cafeteria with the faculty every Tuesday and Thursday. Everyone I met was so kind! Personally, I loved the atmosphere, and I have been searching for a small-knit community to be a part of in college. If that sounds like what you are looking for, I would encourage you to contact the director and ask any further questions. I hope that helps!

@PandaFan If it helps to know, your daughter can reapply to the Honors College after her first semester at Appalachian and it’s a much higher acceptance rate from that pool of applicants. If she plans to do that, she can wait until second semester to have her orientation class. So, if she is accepted she can take her orientation class with the Honors College.

Based on no acceptance to the HC, wait-listed for WRC, and no invite to Scholars Day, my daughter decided to accept her admission to the University of Georgia. Although she loves App State, She was specific on what type of learning and living experience she wanted and wasn’t willing to just settle especially based on the OOS investment when she qualifies for free tuition at any state school in GA.

@bedynamic I don’t know what the interviews will be like. I’m guessing they will ask you some “getting to know you” questions like: Tell me about yourself, etc. They might ask you some thinker or ethical questions. They might ask you why you deserve the scholarship. They might ask what you will contribute to the university and what your plans for the future are. They will want to see that you can communicate effectively. They will want to see the genuine you to see how you might fit in to a cohort of scholars.

That said, I’m wondering what the differences are between Chancellor’s Scholars and Wilson’s Scholars. My child will be interviewing for the Wilson’s with you. In reading about both scholarships, I’d say the description of the Chancellor’s is more appealing, but the Wilson’s actually says that it’s the “most prestigious.” I do see that the Wilson’s seems to emphasize service and people who want to change the world (on a global scale). I’d be interested to hear more about your perceptions of the programs since it seems like you might be in state?? and have heard a little more in depth about them??

@mi5kids I am in state! I have spoken to a lot of people at Appalachian State in the past year. The main difference between the Chancellor’s Scholarship and the Wilson Scholarship is the Chancellor’s is much more academic-based while the Wilson is looking for kids who have a passion to change the world. The Chancellor scholarship is under the Honors College while the Wilson Scholarship stands by itself. Many of the Wilson Scholars participate in the Honors College, though, but it is not required unlike the Chancellor’s Scholarship. They have very similar benefits (the Wilson Scholars actually receive most of the benefits of the Honors College as well), but the Wilson Scholars receive an extra $10,000 stipend for study abroad, internships, and service projects that the Chancellor’s do not. So, I guess you could say the Wilson is more prestigious money-wise and service-wise, while the Chancellor’s is more prestigious academic-wise. The two programs have service, academics, and leadership in their criteria, but they put all their focus on different things. So, I guess it depends on which one describes your child the most.

(Also, the Wilson scholarship is very new. The first Wilson Scholars have not graduated yet, while the Chancellor’s Scholarship has been around for many years.)

Personally, I know I fall into the Wilson Scholarship description more so than the Chancellor’s. Though I value my education highly, plan on attending professional school after my bachelor’s degree, and seek the highest education/opportunities possible, the thing I truly strive for is to make a difference in the world. I think they reviewed everyone’s essays, academics, and extracurricular activities, then, they decided who has the best shot in which program.

If you have any more questions, I would highly recommend your child to reach out to their admission counselor. They will happily give insight!

@bedynamic Thank you so much for all of your comments. You sound like a great candidate for the Wilson’s and I wish you the best of luck next weekend!

@PandaFan, University of Georgia sounds like a really smart decision for your D! Good luck to her. Enjoy the decision-is-made, highly affordable and a great fit - happy dance!

Has anyone heard about financial aid?

Anyone heard anything yet about scholarships?

Accepted to Honors College off the wait list yesterday.

I received something in the mail last week about scholarships.

Congrats @bedynamic !

@Rio123 - congrats on getting into WRC! Did you enroll? Would you share your stats?

Thx
