Appeal for more aid?

My daughter got into Parsons. She received a $28,160 scholarship per year and only received $5,500 in federal loans. That leaves us with $32,820 that we need to borrow per year. We’ve recently moved due to husbands job and my other daughter came home due to personal issues. We used the money we had for her college to do this move (for husbands job) and now she has nothing. Where can I get this money and how? How can she reach out to the aid office to appeal/ ask for more money? Any help would be great help!

Parsons is likely unaffordable. The reasons you state will not likely change their decision.

I read that they grant 57% of appeals though. If I tried what would be best to mention?

They might give you a teeny bit more money… but the likelihood of them giving you $10,000 or more…is VERY small.

But contact them and ask.

It sounds like you need $30,000 or so more…and that’s going to be hard to get.

Your daughter got a $28,000 scholarship…which is HUGE for Parsons.

What was your EFC from FAFSA…because the school will NOT give you aid to cover that.

@flowersinurhair What was her safety?

EFC is about 11k.

Her safety was just community because it’s the only one we can afford without scholarships.

@flowersinurhair What are her stats?

Arts schools…conservatories, etc…just don’t have a lot of money. A $28,000 a year scholarship at Parsons is a very large scholarship. These schools don’t have a lot of institutional money to give out. They don’t meet full need.

She only received $5500 in Direct Loans because that is the MAX amount freshmen can receive in those loans.

Where else did she apply?

FIT (haven’t heard back yet), NYU Tisch (denied) and Parsons. If that is the max freshman can receive where do they get the other money from? (first college kid and my husband and I did not attend so I’m very confused?)

Her states? I’m not sure she knows them best. She had an average SAT, always A’s and B’s, her portfolio is outstanding (not being bias she has won many awards)!

Really…in her case, it sounds like her portfolio is more significant info than her stats. Very often arts schools don’t have a high bar for SAT scores.

Are you instate for FIT? If so, the cost would be about $27,000. If not…it’s about $10,000 or so more.

ETA…I didn’t say her scholarship was the MAX award…I said it was a very good one…from an arts school. It’s almost half of the cost of attendance. And with the $5500 Loan…it IS at half of the cost of attendance.

No we are out of state. Yeah it is big award and she is very happy! Unbeknownst to her we have defaulted on a loan and can’t take out a Parent Plus Loan so I don’t really know where to go from here.

Oh brother.

These are all costly schools.

Maybe she will get some artistic merit aid from FIT.

And there were NO art programs instate where you live?

Which FIT are you talking about? I was talking NY.

@flowersinurhair Most people in the US who go to college go to their instate public option. Most people can’t afford these public options. For middle class people, you would have had to scrimp and save from birth so you could have college savings.

Many, not what she wanted and we plan on moving again anyway.

Me too, FIT in NYC.

@gearmom my husbands job moves us around every two years so she wanted a solid location. Yeah we didn’t though and now we are stuck with no money for her, not her fault totally on us.

@flowersinurhair Honestly most people have no large college savings. What state is she graduating high school from? That is her instate likely.
