Appeal Letter to Berkeley

What do you guys think of my appeal letter? All information is new, meaning it was not originally included in my application. I think the two big points are the ROTC scholarships and the change in major. As far as I know, Environmental Science at Berkeley is WAY less competitive than engineering at Berkeley. Constructive criticism welcome! Thanks for the help.

To whom it may concern,

Upon receiving the news that I was not admitted to Berkeley, I immediately set forth to prove that I am worthy of your reconsideration. Recent circumstances will cast new light on my application making me an even more competitive applicant than previously thought. I would like to remedy this situation by providing updated information regarding my application.

Since sending my application to the UC schools, I was awarded the National Four Year Army ROTC Scholarship to the University of California at Berkeley. I was also awarded the National Four Year Air Force ROTC Scholarship. These scholarship awards are among the most competitive in the nation. They not only exemplify my ability as a leader and as an exceptional student, but cover the full cost of tuition. In addition to these achievements I have organized and lead a third successful high school blood drive. I will be competing in both the famed Bioexpo science fair and in the internationally renowned Solar Car Challenge later this year. Finally, I was accepted for an internship at an energy company in Budapest, Hungary during the summer.

I understand that the UC system does not consider SAT super-scores when evaluating an applicant, but I feel that it is important to note that my SAT super-score is significantly higher than my single sitting test score; 160 points to be exact, putting me at 2120 total. It should also be noted that I desire to change my intended major from Chemical Engineering to Environmental Science. I found that the Environmental Science major at Berkeley more closely matches my passion and background. As you can see in my application, I’m a state science fair winner in alternative fuel research and design. I also hold a leadership position in my school’s Solar Car Club.

I have followed my passion and have proven my success in alternative energy programs and state wide competitions. I am an A student in math and science classes as well as a member of the esteemed Biotech Academy at Ballard High School. I would appreciate your valuable time in reconsidering my application. I have attached a letter of recommendation from my AP chemistry teacher Dr. Dewey Moody for your evaluation. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
XXXXXXX

Your first sentence makes you sound a bit desperate. Also, the people may actually read this thread, so you may have wanted to PM people instead.

ahh good point, however that is why I have concealed my identity (hopefully).

Right, but they may still remember the letter. Is it too late to edit your post? You could just ask to PM it to people who are interested in giving you feedback.

I think it is too late to edit. How do I take it down then?

On second thought, is it that big of a deal that it’s up here? I’m only looking for feedback, I’m not “cheating” or anything.

I thought you had to submit it online? why do you need the address? lol i need feedback too!!! its due fri right? :(

Its due the 15th. I think the address I used is probably superfluous, but it makes it look more like a letter. Everything this year must be done online. You can use myberkeleyapplication to submit your appeal.

Anymore useful commentary? Anyone?

Appeals are a long shot, but I think you have a chance.

Thanks for the hope! What did you think stood out?

Whats a good way to start of an appeal? I don’t want to start off rude/negatively/arrogant that I didn’t get in.

The portion of your appeal referring to your SAT score needs to be omitted. When I was admitted to Berkeley, I went on my official test scores tab and saw that they take the highest score for each section of the SAT. Even though on the UC app you input your highest score in a single sitting, Berkeley goes ahead and superscores anyway. They already know your superscore, and have already evaluated you on that basis. Good luck on your appeal!

Oh, good to know!

Would it be reasonable to add to my ROTC paragraph that Berkeley is a better fit because ROTC is located on campus and that it would be a hardship to travel across the city for ROTC everyday if I went to UCSD???

I would mention it briefly at most. Maybe make something more out of it… like, it’s on campus and that means it is just closer knit with the academics or something, and thus it has a larger presence on campus, which would allow you to thrive more…? I don’t really know. Something more important, since commuting is not really a big concern.

That makes sense, I’ll see if i can work it in.

@Beamers you want to start off direct and determined. I honestly believe I did, although that may not be the opinion of some. You definitely don’t want to kiss butt just to get rejected twice.

What kind of dimwit would post their own letter to the admission officers on CC? I bet someone already copy and pasted this and sent it as part of their appeals to Cal.

Lucky for me I submitted it on march 28th so that something like that wouldn’t happen, but I can still update it if I wish. Plus I sent a hard-copy to the LTC at the Berkeley ROTC unit.

I find the superscores mention to be pointless due to their knowledge of the test scores anyways, but the rest is solid.
