Appeal to Late SIR; Need help FAST

Hey guys,

So my story is a little wordy but bear with me. I’m a Nor-Cal resident (Sacramento), and I was accepted into, among other places, UCSD and UCD. After waiting the majority of the month to SIR between those two, I chose SD because of the relatively greater “prestige” factor. Over the past two-three months I’ve realized that I’ve made a grave mistake. I can’t afford living in La Jolla (my parents aren’t paying for college) and commuting, and in addition, my immediate family and my close aunt’s (who we do alot of caretaking for) health is deteriorating due to illness. I decided to initiate the process of appealing a late SIR at UCD, as I do want to go to a four year and I did work very hard in HS, but I need to be able to be physically and financially able to take care of myself and my family. My question to you guys is, how can I state this in my late SIR appeal without them brushing me off saying “Oh, just enroll in CC.” Thanks in advance.

First of all, UCSD does not have greater prestige over UCD. They are both equal in prestige and ranking these days, but you can argue that each school has better faculty in certain fields.

It seems that you are going through a very tough time, emotionally and financially. Why aren’t you considering going to a CC? How are you going to pay for 4 years at UCD? Are you even eligible to receive financial aid this year at this time? Enrolling at a CC is nothing to be ashamed of, and if you work hard you can transfer into the four year university of your choice. It will be a lot cheaper for you and you’ll be closer to your family. Keep in mind that you won’t be helping your family right out of college if you accumulated thousands of dollars of student loans.
