Family Emergency — Late SIR to UCSD

Hey all,

I’m typing this as urgently as possible because I am just struck with anxiety right now. Recently, I was accepted to UCLA, Berkeley, UCSD, Irvine and SB, and I decided to SIR to Berkeley. San Diego was my second choice, but I thought I would gain some experience in independence by moving to Berkeley. However, my grandma, who I consider immediate family to me, has fallen very ill and my mom lost her job. It’s a very tough time for me right now. My life is falling apart and I need to stay near my family and help them out, which I can do if I go to San Diego. I can’t do that if I go to Berkeley, and I feel like I’m walking on eggshells and will not succeed academically or mentally at Berkeley. That being said, I want to know if a late SIR would be possible to San Diego if I let them know what’s going on. My heart is so heavy and I truly don’t know what’s going to happen. I am worrying I cannot afford Berkeley anymore. I have emailed San Diego asking them to reconsider, but if anyone has heard any stories or knows any insight on late SIRs, PLEASE let me know. I truly don’t know what I’m going to do or what’s gonna happen. Thank you all in advance.

Contact UCSD admissions, explain your situation and see if it is possible. No one on CC can tell you if will they be able to accommodate you but it is worth a try. If not possible, then taking a Gap year and reapplying for college might give your situation time to stabilize. Best of luck and hope things get better.

Unless a gap year is an option, I would register for Berkeley first and then deal with your issue. Registration at Berkeley already started on Wednesday, 2 days ago.
