I called admissions today to inquire info on how the appeal process works. Apparently I have to call back on Mar. 1 to request an appeal packet. I want to get started on my appeal letter right now to send it in ASAP. Are there any instructions that I should know about? Like word limit and what should be included in the letter. Also, around when would I recieve an answer from them?

You can only appeal as to a crucial matter that was omitted from your application that either affected academic performance or had a profound impact on your life. UF will consider such circumstances only if they are documented and the issue omitted would have in all likelihood changed the admission decision. UF will not re-evaluate your application or otherwise consider matters contained in your application, including the transcript, test scores, etc… There are about 200-250 appeals filed each year and on average only 4-5 are granted. You need to review the application from the UF Admissions Office, fulfill the instructions set out there and timely file it. The applications are usually available at the end of February. Good luck.

where do you get your numbers Danielle?

Thank you, Danielle. My academic performance suffered during my sophomore year because of family drama. I don’t think this is a good enough reason for my appeal to work, but my gpa jumped from a 2.5 to a 4.2 within a year, which I think is pretty impressive and should be given a fair consideration. My application already touched on this a bit though, so will they not even look at my appeal? I want to go into detail and give a proper explanation. I don’t have any new test scores to submit or anything, but my senior year has been pretty successful thus far, with AP Calc AB/BC in my schedule too. I know this appeal is a long shot, but what do you guys think? Again, does anyone know when the decisions are gonna be sent? Perhaps end of March? April, May?

Hey vi0812 that sounds all great that youre gpa jumped that much but it most likely wont change the outcome if that is your weighted GPA. A 4.2 weighted isnt that high considering, I was a class of 2012 student and the lowest non-IB student they accepted had a minimum 4.9ish gpa. How did yours jumps so high so fast?

vi0812 - I understand how you feel. We are dealing with a rejection too.

Did you address your family issues in your application? It seems like something you could have mentioned in one of the short answer questions. If you did not, it might be worth trying to appeal the decision.

My information as to the number of appeal applications and the number granted came from the UF Admissions Office and is confirmed by other postings on CC from what students who appealed were told by the UF Admission Office.

I did address the issues, but only briefly. I focused my essay on how successful and hard-working I became after getting kicked out of the IB program due to my grades. That’s why I really doubt this appeal is going to work, but I want to do everything i possibly can. That way, I will have no regrets as I tried my hardest. And I retook all of my F’s and D’s (there were a lot) and got A’s and B+'s in all of them. They were all honors/AP so that really boosted my GPA

That’s why you didnt get in. You had Fs and Ds. If you didnt take care of that and retake them before your senior year to confirm that they wouldnt see those grades, then there is no point in appeal. They dont look at new stuff.

I retook them all during junior year, so they saw the improvement. Thing is, I think they average failed&passed courses instead of replacing them, so I’m not sure where my UF gpa stands

not true if you live in FL. It replaces the grade totally and UF wouldn’t have seen it. A 4.2 Weighted isnt a great GPA. Were your sat or ACT high? What percentage ranking were you in your class? I got denied with a 4.8 weighted 1850 SAT and every extra curricular in the book. My brother got in with less qualifications then me when he applied 6 years ago, I applied last year. I had a friend who had a 1710 on his SAT his GPA was .2 higher and he got in because he was 30 spots higher in my class. I was 50 he was 15-20. It doesnt matter unless you are ranked high. no point in appeal. You wont get it and it will be a waste of time

When there is grade forgiveness in Florida the grade gets replaced for gpa but the original class you got the F or D in is still on your transcript and UF does see the original class and grade it just doesn’t factor in gpa computation

UF does in fact average the grades together but only counts the course as taken once so there are less academic units overall.

Take to your guidance adviser . 3 people have told you 3 different things…
