Appealing as a Different Major

Hi all, I got rejected to UCLA as a Computer Science major. I'm wondering if it would make sense to appeal as a different major (for example, Biology or Mathematics). And, if I did appeal and ask for a major change, do you think that would make any difference? I know that the engineering school is the most competitive which could very well be the reason why I got rejected. I have a 4.8 weighted UC GPA, and a 4.0 unweighted GPA. My SAT score isn't that great, 1890, but it's still just about average... What do you guys think? Thanks a lot for any help.

I am sincerely sorry you didn’t get the result you wanted.

I do not.

One reason I say this is that when appeals succeed, it’s usually because the college or university made its initial decision on the basis of missing or faulty information. For example, they never received your ACT scores, which were significantly better than your SAT scores. Or they were never notified by your school of an error in grading, and that C+ in Junior English was actually supposed to be an A-.

Another reason is that if UCLA were to do this, it would set a dangerous precedent. If word got out that you could try to haggle your way in by being willing to change your intended major, they would be deluged with appeals.

@Sikorsky - First, thank you for your response. You make some good points there. I already wrote a rough draft of my letter of appeal which includes several reasons why I think they should reverse their decision; however, I did include that I am willing to change my major to another major which I specified. Do you think I should leave this part out all together (will it backfire on me?), or would it be okay to simply leave it in there just as an option?

I’m no expert. I don’t think it’ll do any harm to say you’d be willing to pursue a different major. (Really, what harm *could * it do? They already said no.) I just don’t think it’ll help, either.

Well, thanks anyway! I’ll see how it goes…

Good luck. However this turns out with UCLA, I hope you’ll be a lot happier next spring, wherever you are, than you’re feeling right now.

Was your second choice major in the College of Letters and Science? I know that those rejected from HSSEAS can appeal to the L&S, since they don’t take in your second choice major in account if it’s not in HSSEAS.
If not, as Sikorsky said, it isn’t as if it would harm you to mention a change in majors.

Changing your major is not grounds for appeal in my past experience and knowledge. It is not new or compelling information that will make them reconsider you. Your stats and background are the same. It has to be something like a family/medical problem or mistake on the app that affected and caused you to not reach your academic best that you DID NOT mention in your application already.

This must be a joke. Colleges don’t even accept you based off what major you wanted anyways (actually some do, not any I can recall).

HSSEAS at UCLA admits by major. L&S does not.
Anyhow, it doesn’t hurt to try appealing despite the unlikely chances (especially if they already wrote an appeal letter).
