appeals and disappointment..

HERES a message from my professor: ( in reply to an appeal email I sent to the chairman of on the english board)

"You seem to feel that just handing in any work of any quality by any deadline entitles you to a grade of C. Unfortunately, Kate, on the college level, that theory lacks validity; work must meet the level of standards set for a particular course.

Yes, you did submit two “revisions.” Unfortunately, those revisions pretty much ignored the comments written on the original graded essays. For example, for essay 2, I asked you to add research about the two works to which you compared your creation, and I asked you to expand the story a bit by showing more than telling. Your “revision” added exactly 3 sentences, no research, and no expansion of the story. Yet, you expected this “revision” to earn a new and improved grade.

Regarding your project, BEFORE you submitted the final (late) copy, I asked you (in front of others in the class) to add the required pieces your project lacked. You submitted a “part 1” and “part 2”, but that part 2 did not fully address the requirements of the project.

Regarding notification of your progress in the course, in addition to returned, graded work, on week 7, week 10, and week 13, I handed out to all of my students a complete progress report which listed every grade earned and not earned, etc. In fact, because of one of those progress reports, you submitted your “revision” of essay 2, and because of another of those reports, you suddenly submitted your late essay 3 and essay 4. And yes, of course I tried to encourage you; a teacher should always try to encourage students to keep moving forward, to improve, etc.

Kate, arguing that your grade should be higher because other students failed the course does not present a valid or logical argument. In addition, the writing in the very note sent to Dr. Madden demonstrates that your level of writing does not meet the standards of a student who has successfully completed a Composition and Literature 2 course."

I sent an appeal to the board because yes I know my work was average but I know I didnt do so bad as to get an F. Im in a community college just trying to do well. I have suffered grade wise before and Im disappointed that a teacher could allow herself to give a student multiple amounts of positive feedback and then fail them. As I sent the appeal.. I realize I was in the moment and threw out my work.. bad choice I know. BUT I can print out everything and show the board that though my work is average I dont deserve and F right?
...Im really depressed about failing any thoughts or advice?

You turned in two essays late, and it sounded like you had some pretty shoddy revisions to another. In my HIGHSCHOOL, late work is equal to half credit or a ZERO. The fact that your professor still allowed you to turn in late work is alot of leeway. Secondly I love how when people get bad grades in a traditionally grade inflated course, they blame it on the professor rather than themselves even if they admit its average work…

And I mguess you just have to try and retake and put forth your best effort(I have problems doing this) and try to at least get a C.

Your teacher presents a clear and reasonable explanation for your grade. If I were you, I would accept it and start taking your classes more seriously.

Agree with run2flyfree that even in high school, late assignments are often not accepted at all (automatic “F”) or accepted at half credit (automatic “C” or lower, depending upon the quality of the work).
