Applicants of 2013 Thread

Impressive! Im going to visit andover soon. So what kinds of questions do they ask you or generally what kind of questions do they ask you during the interview at any prep school?

And I have another question. I have the princeton review of the cracking the ssat & isee 2011 edition textbook. It has a grading chart on it. Do I follow the 9th grade one or 8th grade one? ( Im applying for 9 th grade)

hey guys i was an applicant of 2012 into the 10th grade, though i was waitlisted/rejected at the (few) schools i applied to. may try again this year for junior year  not sure yet though!

hi everyone!
umm i dont if were still introducing ourselves… but i’m a 2013 applicant and i’ve been lurking CC since like the sixth grade leaving dumb questions here and there. I’m looking into a few schools but andover is my favorite. so far i think if i’m going to apply its only going to be this year because i have fairly good public school that i want to go to with all my friends.

I’ve been thinking mostly about applying to St. Paul’s and Lawrenceville but I don’t think I have enough information to seriously think about this yet, so could anybody please try to answer my questions please? I know it’s a lot to ask, but please look at my posts.

thank you so much!!

Bumping this up! How have everyone’s summers been going?

To be honest, it’s been a pretty lazy summer for me. I’ve been diligently looking for volunteering opportunities but you have to be 16 to volunteer in Scotland. I did get to do some hiking up in the highlands though which was pretty sweet. All in all, the only challenging thing I have done was having to build several model airplanes for kids in the neigborhood. How about you ballerina22 and all other posters on this thread how have your summers been?

hey guys I’m going to apply to some schools soon for the 9th greade. I’m thinking about applying to Andover, Deerfield, Choate, Hotchkiss, Cranbrook, and maybe St. Pauls. Any tips and or people applying to the same schools? It’s my first time applying so any tips would be appreciated.

Hey, I’m reapplying for 10th grade(it’s to be a lot more people reapplying than first timers0 Anyway I wish you guys luck and for some advicee don’t apply only to HADES or GLADCHEMMS schools as great as they are they are very selective with low acceptance rates. I suggest looking at lesser known schools with some great academic programs you may find one you like. So choose a school you really want to go to and when I say that actually look at what the school offers and the types of clubs and programs they havee. Like some schools use the Harkness method for teaching, if that’s something you look for in a school then go for it if not then it may not be a good school choice for you. Also take your SSAT score into play if a school has an average of of lets say 92% and you score a 75% it may be hard for you to get in. So I say apply to both HADES and hidden gems schools.

Hello! I’m applying to Choate and Concord. I’m going into eighth grade and will be applying to be a ninth grader.
I am thinking about Milton, but when I looked at their FAQ I found something funny. The question was, “What years does Milton have boarding?”
And the answer was, “Grade 9, Grade 10, and Grade 11.”
Does this mean that Grade 12 students cannot board?
Thank you =]

Totally agree with magged. However, this year I won’t be able to apply to as many schools as I did last year. As of now, I am reapplying to Deerfield, Middlesex, St. George’s and Blair, and I’m adding Andover. They are all very selective schools, but I figure I need more financial aid, so I want to apply to schools with a larger endowment.

@Bookie101- No it just means that if an 11th grader is applying for 12 grade they wouldn’t be able too. Most schools either have limited 12 grade spots or don’t let students apply for 12th grade at all. But if you started going to Milton at 9th,10th and 11th grade you would still board at Milton for 12th grade.

@ballerina22- Good school choices. I would be needing a lot of financial aid too. Have you considered applying for merit scholarships as well?

Hello, I’ll be re-applying as a 10th grader. Last year, I had no idea what I was doing, as I only found out that I wanted to go to a boarding school three weeks before the application was due. I’m not sure what I’ll be applying to. I’ve already started some applications! The application process is fun for me. Haha

^ haha, last year I started applying on 21st December as well. Best of luck to you all this year though!

It’s not fun rushing! My essays were far from adequate, I’m glad I wasn’t accepted to anything last year haha

I’ve FINALLY whittled down the schools I want to apply to. I decided against Groton (They didn’t have the programs I wanted) and Milton (what’s up with only have 9th, 10th and 11th grade??) and I just don’t really like Choate. And right now my master list is:

Andover, Cate, Exeter, Blair, Hotchkiss and Deerfield.

I was going to decide against Hotchkiss because they don’t have a such a great film program (Andover, Cate and Exeter have extensive ones.) but they have an AMAZING graphical design program. I don’t know if anyone else is interested in this stuff at my age, haha but it’s comforting to know there might be hope! I’m not sure why I’m applying to Deerfield though. Haven’t looked at the course catalog yet, sure it will live up!
I’ve filled out the Cate application (and some of the others, as well as practice 2011 Exeter and Andover essays…)-- one of the main reasons I really like this school is because of their awesome personal application! They’ve already updated it and after requesting a catalog, I got an email from the Dean of Admissions, haha… I’m starting to like this school, i find it CHARMING and I encourage you to apply so I could maybe meet some of you! Here’s a sample of the student profile, which they expect to be filled out all by the student (well, duh):

The song that best describes me
I have a habit of
If I wore a sign
Teachers often tell me
My earliest memory (puking at Applebees… NOT sharing that one with the admissions! :p)
I would like to have dinner with
A book that has changed me
I admire
My friends would describe me
Keep calm and
I am passionate about
A perfect meal
My power animal

And… yadda yadda yadda, haha. I think that’s way better than boring short-answers! (I think they have those too though…)
So I encourage you to apply to Cate! It might not be mentioned as much but has recently gone to the top of my list!
Also thinking about applying to St. Andrew’s, in part to the GORGEOUS location…

That’s…it! Now I’ll just go back to my Finder folder labeled ‘applications’ and go into one of the random subfolders and get to work!

P.S @PrepQWill and EnemyOfTheSun… For my [elite] private day school applications last year I found out five days before the deadline! I had no idea what the ISEE was, but I took it anyway, haha! (I got in, but I feel like the school is just a lot of rich people and less people that care about academics  aw i got my hopes up for this school and they let me down. Even at this school that’s supposed to be for smart people, the students… don’t like to study. that’s sad. hopefully if i get rejected at every school it will get better in high school.

^ Oh geez. that was way too long. :stuck_out_tongue:
Also, I don’t like the 60 second rule.

Just saw this while browsing on the Exeter website-- they finally removed their notice about not having space for 2012 applicants. They replaced it with one that said the 2013 application would be available in early September! :p

Everything’s getting so close! Unlike last year, when I was already studying for the SSATs in June, I haven’t even started to prepare. Gah so much to do! I must request info, start making vocab flashcards, and schedule interviews. This application round came so fast!

I thought that most schools just use the same application questions each year? Doesn’t Andover use the same questions each year? If not, do I need to request information, again?
