Application Essay Tips: CommonApp/Supplement

would someone mind reading my Penn supplement essay? It is about 400 words long. I have been having a bit of trouble with it, so i would appreciate any feedback. ill pm it if anyone wants to read. thanks!

I don’t really come on here anymore but I thought I’d bump this again to help out any rising seniors who want help/direction with their essays. Good luck potential Class of 2016!

@Candygyrl0811: Thank you so much for ‘bumping’ again here since Im a potential Class of 2016 and so desperately looking for specific guidelines for Penn essays. Im just so in love with the university.

Btw, are you from Penn? If you are, that you be even greater if we can ask for some ‘inside’ cool info about life and academics in Penn!:D

Thanks greatly for the post:D

Well I’ll be a freshman this Fall so I’m still learning all the ‘insiders’ but if you have questions I can answer them to the best of my ability. Particularly about the application process since I was in you guys’ shoes last year.

Thank you so much!!! but for the “Why Penn” Essay, do I need to write why I am a good match to Penn?

In a nutshell yes but the best way to do this is to show what communities you would fit into at Penn (ie clubs, sports, service groups) and what you could add to those communities.

Does Penn like demonstrate interest in the school? I’ve volunteered there at ther hospital.I also have >450 hours at a research lab at UPENN

Yes Penn loves demonstrated interest. That could be a campus tour, requesting information, or attending one of their national info meetings. It’s also great that you’ve volunteered at their research lab.

I definitely think that would help. The reason that they try to look for genuine interest in the school in applicants is that hopefully, if they are admitted they will be very involved in the school.

I don’t think the ivys track shown interest because there are so many people visiting the campus and going to information sessions that it would be too much work to track. Volunteering at their hospital would probably help, but since most people dont live near penn, it most likely isn’t a huge plus.

The commonapp website says the Penn supplement isn’t available yet. Do the questions ever change from year to year?

@spectralfish actually ivy’s do track shown interest. of course they don’t expect everyone to visit the campus because of time/money issue but it doesn’t hurt. they also have informational tours across the US and representatives that go to high schools.

@aceofspades15 the questions change but the basis of the question is always going to be “Why Penn?” The other part of the question is really fluff. That’s how it usually is with supplements for the Ivy’s unless they decide to be random and switch it up. I don’t forsee that happening.
