Does NYU put a lot of weight into this?

This is french for if I have a less than stellar GPA (3.5 unweighted...pretty average, but NYU does get more and more competative by the year), an above average SAT (2080) and write a really, really, really fabulous essay, will i have a better shot? Or is it more about "solid scores" with the essay as a secondary component?

I'm also applying ED for the class of 2012. Thanks for any responses! Best of luck to anyone going there next year or applying next year!

I can only speak for myself personally, but I do believe it does. I had a really really crappy GPA (although I took difficult courses), but my essay was one of my best pieces of writing and it managed to explain my low GPA. Compared to a lot of other applicants, even from my school, my transcript definitely wasn't up to par but I think it was my essay, activity sheet and supplement questions that got me in.

Good luck!

If you apply to Steinhardt, you'll be weighed heavily on the quality of your essay and the person you perceive yourself to be.

I got a scholarship to NYU with a 3.6 unweighted (6 AP's) and a very below average SAT score. My EC's were truly amazing though..

Just a tip: Read over how NYU advertises itself on its website, like some of their goals, ambitions, and strengths. Compare those qualities to yourself and basically tell them (indirectly, of course) that those qualities are exactly what you're looking for in a school.

NYU looks more for kids who are compatible with the school than kids who have stellar academic records.

Good luck!
