While filling out my application online last night for Penn State, I was asked to declare my intended major. I am currently a student at a community college and am applying as a transfer student. I intend to major in Actuarial Science. However, that major was not an option. Could this be because I would have to attend the Smeal College of Business? I'm not sure how the application process works. I thought it just sent my application to all there schools. Can anyone give me any info on why actuarial science wasn't even an option for me
A friend who attends penn state suggested I choose business as my intended major and if/when I am accepted I will be able to choose which major I wish to pursue.

try that link

hey Chris- I’m also applying to Penn State for actuarial science! (but as a first-year student) I think when I filled out the application, the major was under the Smeal College of Business. There was no option for just “Actuarial Science” but there was “Risk Management, Actuarial Science,” so I just picked that. It might be different for a transfer application, not sure.

For some reason it doesn’t have the option to choose which college. It just gives me to option to choose from an Alphabetical listing, Campus/location, and academic area of interest. I can’t seem to find risk management or actuarial science anywhere.

Figured i’d bump this up as I will be focusing on finishing my applications around next week since finals will be over for me by then. Anyone have any info on why I can’t choose actuarial science as a program as a transfer student? Also, I have read around the forum that people are applying to certain campuses and colleges within the university. Do transfer students not have that option? Again, any help would be greatly appreciated!

bump! anyone?

Did you check out the link above posted by rd10213? It looks like there is an actuarial science “option” under Smeal and the math and stats majors. When applying as a freshman to Smeal, students aren’t officially accepted to any of the specific majors. All must complete the entrance to major requirements (about 8-9 general business courses) and then apply to their specific major in sophomore year. Most of those majors have a minimum GPA requirement and some of the Smeal majors are controlled majors–I think actuarial science is one of them. As a transfer, they may not consider you for admission directly to the actuarial science major since you haven’t completed those entrance to major requirements. It is possible that they won’t accept a transfer student into that major at all, but you should call Smeal to find out what your options are. Good luck.
