APPLICATION HELLPPPP!! URGENT. PLEASE HELP A GUY OUT

So I’m applying to Carnegie Mellon as a Physics major (Mellon College of Science). But I’m in the process of writing my essay, and I have already talked about my interest in physics and how CMU can fulfill my interests in physics.

Now I don’t mind doing engineering either. Physics still my first choice.

Would it improve my chances if I also apply for engineering? I’m thinking about computer engineering.

But the thing is I have to fit in my interest in computer engineering with my interest in physics in this one page essay which seems challenging.

Would my essay that is focused on physics (computational physics to be exact) be watered down if I try to incorporate my interests in Comp Eng? Would this diminish my chances of getting into either of the majors?

Statistics (SAT, GPA, and acceptance rate) show that the Mellon College of Science is relatively easier to get into that Carnegie Institute of Technology (engineering)

But I know someone who actually got waitlisted at the mellon college of science and accepted to engineering. This makes me worried.

Sorry for the long post.

Please share your knowledge.

Since you can apply to up to three different departments in regular decision, I don’t see how applying to both would hurt you. However since ECE is the most selective major in CIT so I don’t see how it would particularly help either (other than the fact you get considered for two different departments).

As for your essay, I wouldn’t try to incorporate computer engineering into your interest in physics. I would just talk about it in a separately like “I’m also interested in computer science because…” without trying to forge a connection between them unless you do have a clear-cut explanation (without making it up/BS’ing). I think the adcoms would be pretty good at sensing BS by now.
