APPLICATION MISTAKE - URGENT

Before I submitted my application, I was going back and forth on applying to CoE or LSA, and I changed it multiple times on the common app. Apparently, I left it at LSA for computer science, because that’s what wolverine access and common app shows. The problem is that I wrote my Why Michigan essay on the engineering school. I guess I forgot what I left the major at and never checked.

I’m fine with applying to LSA, partly because I have a (slightly) higher chance of being accepted to it, and partly because I might not want to do engineering.

Should I email somebody at Michigan and try to explain myself? Should I offer to re-write the essay for LSA? If possible, I don’t want to simply switch the major to engineering, but if it’s the best/easiest thing to do, then I’ll do it. Will I be fine if I just leave it?

Any advice? If emailing is best, who should I email?

@as1799 - not sure if they will allow, but worth trying. Start with http://admissions.umich.edu/contact-us - use Live chat or email your area’s admissions counselor.

@MedSciBud not sure if they will allow what? The change?

@as1799 - yes - not sure if they will allow you to change after you have already submitted the application, but I am not the AO, so please ask them directly.

bump - anybody else?

@MedSciBud how would I explain that to the AO without saying that LSA is easier and that’s why I’m applying to it?

I agree with the others that have said that they may not allow it. Especially if you’re trying to switch your essay to LSA instead of engineering. So you can just say “oh I accidentally selected one instead of the other on the common app”.

@c011e9e You don’t think it would be possible to change the essay? There’s no way they’d accept it because it’s for the wrong school?

Would this be a good explanation? “Before applying, I was contemplating on applying to the College of Engineering and LSA, and I switched it multiple times on the application. I wrote the Why Michigan Essay thinking that I was applying to the College of Engineering. Obviously, I still had LSA selected. If at all possible, I would still like to apply to LSA. To do that, do I need to re-write the essay?”

If I send that email, it would be after Tuesday, because that’s when I get my newest ACT score. If it’s not as good as I want, I’ll apply LSA. If it is, I’ll just ask to switch to engineering.

@as1799 - all you can do at this point is try. Rest is up to the admissions office.

I agree with @MedSciBud… The worst they can do is say no, so it’s worth a shot.
They might say no because you would be submitting an essay, key component to the app, after the deadline. A week after if you’re waiting for your test score.
It is possible that they could decide to push your app until RD and let you submit the new essay. Or they can give you exactly what you want haha… Only an AO would know.
Hope it works out!!

@MedSciBud thanks for the help. @c011e9e I never thought of regular decision. That actually makes me feel better!
