Application question

I was writing my answer to part two, 12 b. that says.. "Although you may not yet know what you want to major in, which department or program at MIT appeals to you and why?"

I didnt read it too carefully at first and I was thinking.. alright, its the what do you want to major in question. Is this asking you like.. do you want to go into the science/engineering school, the business.. etc? Could someone clarify this for me?

Thanks!
Lewis

It's pretty much interested in whatever you have to say. You can specify a department or major, but the most important part is for you to say what you would do AT MIT and not too much on what you will do after.

As long as you answer honestly (and why shouldn't you in this case?) it doesn't really matter how specific you are in your answer. Some people say "Course 9" and go on about how much the brain interests them. As for me, I felt pretty silly answering with "engineering," without specifying a certain type. =) But I explained why I was passionate about engineering and here I am. I hope this answers your question.

Yeah, we have no quotas for majors or for any of the 5 schools, so don't think you need to write something obscure here to help your chances. :-) Just be honest - we just want to know what you're interested in! (In our experience, about half of all MIT admits major in something other than what they write here.)
